The Cotton Denim Safari Jacket: IRL Pics

The Cotton Denim Safari Jacket is from J.Crew and retails for $98, item #14963, seen here on the J.Crew website. It is described by J.Crew as a lightweight cotton jacket that can also be worn as a shirt, which is actually the way I prefer it. I made several Polyvore sets with the jacket and took a little time to snap some pics of the outfits IRL. I personally prefer the first 2 looks...not sure how I feel about the jacket with the Boyfriend Chinos, or if I even like the Boyfriend Chinos on me...they may be going back. I am wearing the jacket in an XSmall...all sizes are now sold out online, except for XLarge which is waitlisted until 11.02.2009.

The pants are the Gap Curvy Crop pants and the jacket is worn as a shirt.

The pants are from Ann Taylor Loft and my shoes are from Kohl's *they're my stand-in until the BR pair go on sale*.

Here it is styled with the Old Navy scarf around the neck...I think I actually like it better this way, or else with the wooden necklace from Kohl's. I just like *something* at the neckline...

What are your thoughts on the Cotton Denim Safari Jacket? Have you tried it on? Seen it IRL? Are you considering getting it? Do you own it? I'm undecided on this one...I'd love to hear your thoughts. :)

  1. I don't have it (but am a bit of J. Crew addict and have plenty of other stuff from there!)

But I like how you wear it with the scarf/necklace. I agree that something around the neck looks nice. (Without it, I think, the jacket looks a little too, "Hey, I'm wearing a man's shirt.")

But I love the first look, with the capris. that's my favorite of the bunch.

(I'm a relatively new reader, and I love your blog!)

  2. Thank you for the ideas on styling the jacket. I like the jacket on you and plan on seeing if I can find it at one of the local JC stores to see how it looks on me. I wish we lived closer to Florida...we would hire you in a heart beat to help us with the fall 'back to school' shopping.

I tend to be more of a reader than a poster, but I do want to acknowledge how much I appreciate the time that you put into your blog and polyvore sets. You are very talented.

  4. I am a frequent reader of your blog too and love it although rarely have time to post. You have been a real inspiration in getting me out of becoming a frumpy mom and thanks to all your great polyvores and blogging made it easier to have a put together look for every day and make smart shopping choices!! I'm now an addict of the versatility of a JCrew wardrobe - love it!

Regarding the jacket, I'm just not loving it. And I love most anything JCrew. It's just too reminicent of the denim shirt look, although it does look nicely tailored w/ cute detailing, and perhaps is better IRL which I cannot vouch for. I just don't think it is $98 cute. That's just my opinion though. If you love it I say go for it. It obviously has a lot of people who like it being practically sold out and all. I'm just happier with my contrast-stitch perfect shirt, a little lighter weight, but similar look.

  5. I just started following your blog, and really enjoy reading your posts. I'm obsessed with J. Crew! Love the jacket on you. For me...I wear jeans most of time, and don't like jean on top and bottom.

  6. I think it's cute on you. I haven't seen it IRL and probably won't at this point. :) I have two denim jackets so I don't need another one, but I do think it's cute and I like that it's suppose to be soft.

  7. FFM, it's flat out adorable on you (and I like it all the different ways, too), but IRL on me at my B&M I was unmoved, unimpressed and uninspired. :-) I think I prefer a more structured jacket look OR a more fluid cardigan look on myself, and this piece, although cute as a button and a pretty color, didn't fit either bill.

Can I tell you while I'm here that your truly imaginative and wonderful Polyvore sets are the whole reason why I've become a JCA this year, started my own little blog and started learning the fine art of Polyvoring?!? I can't even remember how or why, but somehow last winter your Polyvore sets came up on something I Googled. I remember distinctly losing (happily) almost a whole afternoon sitting at this computer with a silly grin on my face while I browsed.

I don't know whether to thank you and hug you or to send Tony Soprano after you. American Express and J. Crew most definitely thank you!!! LOL!

  8. You look great in this jacket. I had been questioning it and now I just want to own one. Too bad they are sold out online. I saw one on ebay in an XS a few days ago but looks like someone snatched that up.

Thanks for all the ideas you offer in styling clothes!

  9. I think you look amazing in this jacket! I particularly like how you have the sleeves rolled! It just looks chic and casual...I have not been to my B&M lately to check it out, but I might hold out for a more traditional denim jacket since I don't have a regular one yet!

  10. It's just so-so for me. Not WOW. But, of course, you look great in it! Even though it is not a WOW piece, I can see why it would sell out quickly - it is basic and not "trendy", and it can be worn spring, summer and fall.

  11. This didn't float my boat at all. It's interesting to see how many people went ga-ga for it. At one of my local stores there were a lot of pre-orders on it. I think the color is off for me. If it had been a different shade, not so purple-y that might have made it nice. I'm not 100% on the cut either, though. However, it does seem like it could be from one of a couple decades.

  12. FFM, you look adorable in that jacket. I love all the styling ideas!

Even so, I'm still on the fence about mine. I'll have to keep it a little while longer and see if it's going to work.

  13. I tried this jacket when it first came out and kind of liked it but the price put me off. I finally got it in store with the $25 off $125 card and the price came down to $78, which is moe decent. I haven't bought a jean jacket in a while (years) and I like that this one is a little bit different and can be worn as a shirt too. I agree that when you wear it as a shirt it needs something around the neck, a scarf or a statement necklace. It's actually really nice with a skirt and also over a dress (I tried it with the Playa dress and it was very cute). In fact I think it's nicer with skirts than with pants. Alos, in the store I have always seen it belted (a man's rough belt or a serengeti) and it's kind of chic that way. Hope it helps!

  14. Nope, this jacket doesn't do much for me either. Just not "IN LOVE" with it. I prefer it as a jacket and not a shirt. You have styled it well but I am just not "feeling it" and I have too many clothes to buy something I don't love.

  15. Good Morning Everyone and THANK YOU so much for your comments!

Sarah: Welcome and thank you so much for commenting! I love what you said about it looking like a man's shirt...I think that is really true in the pic with it as a jacket over the ruffle tank. It definitely looks better with the scarf for that look. :)

Lake Nokomis: Thank you so much! I truly appreciate your comment and kind words...you have made my day! :)

Thank you SO much Mikaela! :)

  16. shopmom: Thank you so much for taking the time to comment! I agree about the jacket looking just like a denim shirt and I'm not sure it's $98 cute, either.

luvfashion: Welcome and thank you for commenting! I agree that it's a *no go* if you are a jeans on the bottom all the time type of girl..not a great look to go head to toe denim.

math teacher: I also love that it's soft, but do have numerous denim jackets already. This really feels like more of a shirt to me and not a jacket, though. Let me know if you happen to get the chance to see it IRL...I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. :)

JCAUNCmom: WOW! I just don't know what to say! THANK YOU SO MUCH for your kind words...I can't begin to tell you how much your comments mean to me! I truly appreciate you taking the time to share them with me! :)

  17. Summerilla: Thank you so much! I'm thinking this will probably end up as a popback eventually, since some that got it will more than likely return it, so there's a good chance you can get it later. :)

Thank you Gingersnap and thanks for stopping by, too! :)

JennyK: It's not really a WOW piece for me, either, and that's why I'm undecided on it. It's a great basic, but I already have plenty of basics so this may go back.

Hi Gigi! I do like the color and fit of the jacket, but not the price tag. I think it sold so well because there weren't that many great items in the new arrivals to begin with. Plus it was one of *Jenna's picks* and my PS said they always sell well.

  18. cdp: Thank you so much! I feel the same way...cute, but I'm still on the fence about it.

Ema: Thank you! I've seen the pics with it on you and think it looks really cute! I love the idea of it with a dress and skirt, too. I think the price you paid is a lot better than the $98...it would definitely be more worth it for me then, too.

Summer: Thank you for stopping by and for commenting! I'm not sure I'm *in love* with this jacket either. The price is a turn off for me...even though it is well made and has great detailing I can't help but feel that $100 and change (with tax) is just a bit too much for it.

  19. Hi FFM - the jacket looks great on you, but it's a no go for me.... I'm not wowed by it, and I made a promise to myself to only purchase clothes/shoes/accessories that I truly love. I have wasted so much money on items that I inevitably only wore once and then donated to the church.

As for the shoes, are you referring to the BR 'Sonya' huarache platform wedge? If so, they are on sale now, for $99.99.
