J.Crew Tiered Ruffle Tank Alternative from Express

The Fall '09 Lookbook from J.Crew has a picture of the Tiered Ruffled Tank which is due out in September and currently available on preorder for $88.

I recently found a less expensive alternative at Express called the DREAMWEIGHT COTTON TIERED RUFFLE SCOOP-NECK TOP seen here on Express.com. I ordered the size Small in Black and the Indigo Print seen here . When the Express tanks arrived I have to say I was really pleasantly surprised. The tanks are a decent quality, and the fabric is soft to the touch, a 52%Cotton/48%Modal blend that reminds me a lot of the Ringspun Cotton at J.Crew. They are normally priced at $29.50 each, but right now they are on Buy One Get One Free sale, so you can get 2 for that price. I took a couple of RL photos so you can see how it looks on.
I tried to take a decent side view so you can see that the ruffle tiers go all the way around the tank.

It can easily be worn under a blazer or cardigan, too. Here it is with the Donegal Tweed Blazer:

So, what do you think...a decent alternative?

  1. I own a couple of the Express version and they're great. I wish the cap sleeve was a little less fluttery but that's easy to fix. Looks great on you FFM!

  2. Thanks roxy! What colors do you have? Are you considering the J.Crew Tank when it comes out in September, too?

  3. FFM, I love the tank on you! I might have to go check it out this weekend at Express, although I wish they had more 'autumny' colors. Great alternative! I recently noticed that the Forever21 website has a similar top previewed as well. If you click under the 'dressy' shirts heading, the model on the page is wearing a tiered tank that is also very cute and similar to the J.Crew one, although I can't find it in the listings. Thanks for the suggestion!

  5. Thank you Mariana! That top at F21 you mentioned was actually my first choice but it was only available in a Large on the website and none of the F21 stores near me had it in my size. It sold out a couple of weeks ago, so that's probably why it doesn't show up anymore. The Express top in the color *Currant* appears to be a nice color for Autumn...I wouldn't mind having the Indigo, either. Good luck at the mall this weekend...let me know if you get the chance to try this tank on. :)

  6. What a great alternative! And the price is wonderful too! I am not really a big fan of express, but this top might make me go in there and take a peek for myself! :)

  10. Thank you so much Bianca! :) I like it with the blazer, too...it's a nice little *surprise* peeking out from under the structured jacket.

  11. Express can be a hit or miss for me at times so thanks for bringing this to my attention. I am going to have to check it out the next time I'm at my local mall.

  13. Thanks for sharing FFM! You look *fabulous* in the top [as always!]! I think I have an EXPRESS gift card in my purse that has been floating around in there for about a year- I may just have to dig it out now! ;)

  14. Thanks Emily and Coley! It sounds like your experiences with Express are the same as mine. Every now and then I find something really decent there...I would count this as one of those times. :)

  16. Hi FFM! I think it looks lovely! I wonder if they have them in the stores??? b/c I live about 3 miles from one! I'll have to look this weekend.

I am glad you mentioned the September roll out b/c I did notice that there were items in the look book that I have not seen yet...and this top was one of them!

I wonder if you might like to offer any tips to some of the 'newer' polyvore-ers on how to 'file' , make categories, to organize our items for making sets. I posted the question on my new little blog that I am trying to start...and there are some other newer members who would like some tips. If not, I understand. Thank you.

  18. Thanks FFM for the found.
The top looks very cute with the blazer. Also, I like your outfit from the prior day, I wish you had a IRL pic. Have a great weekend!

( The Outfit of the Day) note: I don't know what it's happening , for some reason the page is not allowing me to publish my comment with my blog name?!?!?

  19. I love that the ruffles go all the way around on this top, I saw a similar one at target but the ruffles were only on the front. My local express had these in store as of last weekend and they were on sale there as well - I think they even had more of a color selection in store. You must have read my mind b/c I have been thinking about this top all week!

    Thanks for the post!

  20. I wish the Express ones worked for me. I have a freakishly long torso and they just look silly on me :( but I love the look of them!

Are your necklaces JCrew? I love them!

  21. I bought the same top in two colors (black and purple) about a month ago when they had an extra 40% all tops. I agree it's a nice top. It's tiered, but the material is soft so it doesn't add extra pounds on our body like some other tiered tops!

FFM, thanks for your suggestion on the other post about my question on purchasing multiple colors of a piece of clothing! :)

  22. That is truly fabulous, as I would expect from FFM. The tiered ruffle tank is one of my faves in the fall lookbook, so I have been curious to see it IRL, but I definitely want to check out the Express version too. I am not sure about the cap sleeves as they are not my best sleeve, but it is definitely worth a try. Thanks for posting!!

  24. Thanks Suzy! Let me know if your Express has them. :) Btw, I answered the Polyvore question on your blog. :)

Thank you Roxy! I also contemplated getting the dark purple one and then went with the basic black instead. I remember seeing the leopard one, too...very cute! Thanks for the code, btw!

  25. Thanks Outfit of the Day! I'll try to get a pic the next time I wear the convertible/Sanur dress...they're definitely on my favorites list. :)

Hi Stacie! I like that the ruffles go all the way around, too...let me know if you get one! I'd love to see RL pics of it on your blog, too! :)

Hello Ruffles and Heels (love your name, btw)! Yes, my necklaces are from J.Crew. They are the 40" Pearl and Chain necklace seen here and the regular Pearl and Chain necklace seen here . They are 2 of my favorite necklaces and I wear them all the time. :)

ny0311: I agree about it not adding pounds...remarkable with all those ruffles, but very true. It sounds like you got a fantastic deal on yours!
