New Year...New Arrivals: Old Navy

Let's look at some of the New and Not So New Arrivals arrivals at Old Navy. I think that the quality overall has gotten a lot better over the past year and so have the styles, but shopping there is still a hit or miss for me. For example: the Black Sateen blazer that I wore on Sunday seen in this post is an ABSOLUTE HIT for me and I wear it quite frequently. However, the Plaid Belted Shirt Dress below was an ABSOLUTE MISS and was quickly returned. Now that I think about it, hit or miss is just what it's like shopping at J.Crew nowadays, too. Except the prices at ON are much lower so I'm not as likely to be upset or disappointed when the item doesn't look good IRL, even though it may online...does that make sense? I do love it when something shows up and it is so much better than I had expected, though. That's the good thing about ON...they can really surprise you with their items sometimes, and in a very good way, offering a low price but with good quality.

Ok, enough discussing...on to the picks:

I have a white Boyfriend cardigan I picked up for a few dollars last Spring and it has held up really well.

Distressed Boyfriend Chinos available in 7 colors and 3 inseam lengths, as well as Tall and Petite sizes.

Ribbed Scoop Neck Tee. I love those stripes.

Cropped Denim Jacket. ON Denim Jackets are really nice. I own 3 of them, and even wore a Maternity Denim jacket from ON during my last 2 pregnancies.

This little bag looks cute...has anyone seen it IRL?

Cute umbrellas and the price is nice, too.

Any thoughts on Old Navy? Do you have any items you would recommend?

  1. The next time I am there I am going to look at the denim jackets - the image I have of them is the 1970's Levi jean jackets from my youth and I have always avoided them as an adult. I see Patina wearing them and they always look so cute on her!

  2. Tried on the weekend jeans at ON...and loved the fit! But I couldn't get over how "distressed" they were - we're talking rips and shreds. Is it a sign of my age? I'm 43...maybe I'm too old for the "distressed look." :-)
I'm commenting on this 'cos I see that now they have the "distressed" chinos.

  3. Suburban Princess: Definitely check out the denim jackets. They are such a great staple to have in your wardrobe and are perfect for *dressing down* outfits while still looking really cute. :)

  4. Ursula: The distressing on the weekend jeans is my only *issue* with them. I've actually commented before that I wish they would make them in a non-distressed version, and then they would be just about perfect. I have noticed that the Weathered wash is much less *distressed* than the Drew wash is though. Were the ones you tried on the dark or medium wash?

  6. Hi Coley! I'm not sure if they are still selling them in the stores, but it's definitely worth checking to see. The blazer is really comfortable and flattering, not to mention the price was fantastic, too. :)

  7. Love our ON recommendations. Our ON just got remodeled and is all new and hip inside. The downside is the blaring bizarro music they play, but I'll suffer through it for a great deal and a fab find!

  8. Hi FFM, what I meant to say above was love YOUR ON recs. Also, something I've noticed about ON this past few months (maybe it's recession related) is that often items in the store are cheaper than online - that's because they have lots of in-store promos/sales that they do offer online these days, so sometimes it pays to go into the store if you can. In the past the prices were the same, but lately on more than one ocassion I've found this to be true for both Women and Kids clothes at Gap and ON.

  9. FFM, you are totally right about ON being hit or miss, but I have gotten much wear from the black sateen blazer, the navy and the red peacoats, the black and khaki trench coats, long sleeve stripe tee (earthtones) that you have used in your sets. I also like the Sweetheart Cord bootcut jeans. I usually pick up summer tanks and the lightweight cotton turtlenecks for layering from ON. I want to try the "weekend jeans" ~ Do you happen to know if the sizing would be consistent with the sizing of the cords? Wanted to order online, but not sure about the size. Once again, thanks for "screening" the ON selections and making new recommendations! Super helpful, FFM!

  10. Hi Janna! I've noticed the price differences from online to in-store, too. You are SO right about being able to find better deals if you have the time to go in, and the clearance sections at ON are always full of great bargains, too. :)

  11. Hi Margie! It sounds as if you have found some great pieces at ON...don't you just love knowing you got them at such fantastic prices?

Weekend Jeans: the size that fit me best are the 4 long. I haven't tried on the ON cords, but if it's any help at all, I normally wear a size 2 in J.Crew and Gap jeans, but go up a size at ON. The weekend jeans are lower rise, so at first I went up to a 6. However, they stretch out so much that I re-bought them in the size 4. Now if I wear the 6's I have to wear a belt but not with the size 4's. HTH!! Thank you for stopping by! :)

  12. Thanks FFM on the sizing info. for the weekend jeans. Yes, that definitely helps! The ON prices are especially fantastic when items are on sale and/or there is a % off coupon (sometimes 30 %). Also, on Tuesdays, there's a small savings automatically (10%). I also use my BR card and get FREE shipping. If something doesn't work, I can run it back to the store near me. Easy and reasonable.

  13. Margie - If it's low rise, you might want to size up one. That seems to be true for me w/ON. In the drawstring hem cords & the weekend jeans & took a 6. Both of those are low rise. In the sweetheart cords I took a 4P, my usual size in ON. They have a regular or midrise, I believe. HTH.

  14. Oh...FFM, yes I've seen the little gold clutch. It's cute. The snap is kind of big -- I think it takes away from the look. But I'm sure that's the look they were going for w/the jumbo hardware. Personal preference.

  15. I have purchased more Old Navy in the last year then in my whole life. I have picked up some great deals for an average of $5 a piece. The last two items were a ruffle sweatshirt for $5 and a sundress for $3. I refuse to buy anything from there full price after being burned a couple of times. I dislike the prices there change on a weekly basis.

  16. I buy my jeans and chino shorts at Old Navy - the quality is basically the same but why pay $40 dollars for a pair of basic shorts when you can get them for less than $20? I prefer to spend my money on things exclusive to higher ticket price items like J Crew's artsy tees and "different color from the rest" sweaters. I have the Weekend jeans and wear them a lot - a SA in AT Loft asked where I got them -she loved them and couldn't believe where I bought them! I also love their flannel pj bottoms and basic tees.

  17. I usually shop online, and I see things I like on the Old Navy site, but I wish they would use models or at least mannequins! It's hard to judge things like neckline and length from just a product shop. That's why I haven't bought anything from ON yet.

  18. Sorry, I meant a product shot, not shop!

  19. Lady Cardigan, ON shows the products on some models. I know that some of the cords & the cord dress had shots w/models. They cut off their heads, if I recall correctly. It's still not great photography, though. Perhaps Someone Of Importance at the company will see this thread and consider... There is not a lot of incentive though as they are now selling out of things online in certain sizes or colors, before they even get to sale.

  20. FFM ~ Will you be making some Polyvore sets with these ON items that you featured here? Hint.....hint......

  21. gigi: Thanks for the info on the gold clutch. :)

Cricket: Congrats on all of your great ON deals! I agree with you about the ever changing prices...they seem to change about as frequently as they do at Kohls.

anon@7:26: I think it is definitely better to buy the basics for less and ON is a great place to do just that. :)

Lady Cardigan: Gigi is correct that some of the items have pics of them on the models. It's usually the pants like their khakis and jeans, plus their dresses. The pics leave a whole lot to be desired though. Thanks for stopping by! :)

    Margie: I sure will! :)

  22. Thanks, FFM! I tried on the medium wash, but your posts will probably make me go on into ON and check them out again. Ah, the power you wield... :-)
