"Takin' It to the Max" Part Three: Featuring the Old Navy Surplice Drawstring Maxi Dress

Part Three of my "Takin' It to the Max" series features a maxi dress from Old Navy.

This is the Surplice Drawstring Maxi Dress from Old Navy currently available in *Royal Flush* and *Black Jack*. (It also comes in a Black or Brown Butterfly print that is currently sold out online.) The dress retails for $29.50 and comes in Regular, Tall, and Petite sizes. The description on the Old Navy website reads: "As long on style as it is in length, this soft jersey-knit dress easily transitions from casual day to elegant evening. A drawstring waist offers customizable comfort."

IRL:

I am wearing the XSmall in the Black Butterfly print. The fit on this one is really nice, and the dress is comfortable on. The fabric is a substantial weight so I don't anticipate having to wear a slip with it, and it's bra strap friendly, as well.

Others to consider:

  1. Oh - I love that print - Do you know if it is available in the stores?
I picked up a solid black early in the season and love it!

  2. Hi Rachel! The website doesn't say online only, so I think there are pretty good odds of it being in the stores. I'm glad to hear you are enjoying the black one you got. I'm also considering it, as well.:) Have a great day!

  3. I think this is a great dress if you live in Florida:) and it look great on you-- But the print is very large--I did look at all the maxi dresses at ON over the past few months but even for the price I found them ill fitting or not well made...just my 2 cents worth. I was disappointed.

  9. The butterfly print maxi looks good on you (what doesn't :)), but it's not my favorite print. I reaaaally like the Lauren Conrad maxi. I will have to make a trip to Kohl's soon. I'm actually going to Florida on vacation in a few weeks and think the LC dress would be perfect!

  10. I haven't seen that ON dress, so I might have to go check it out. I'm on the search for the perfect maxi dress for a trip to Jamaica, so this topic is great!

I tried on the Large Blooms Maxi dress at Loft and really loved the fit and material. Alas, the colors were terrible on me (pale/blond). They didn't have the navy/white version at my store. It dug a little bit at the neck and was definitely long - heels required (I'm 5'5") or hemming needed. But overall, I thought it was really nice quality. (Should be, for $98!)

I also tried on some others at F21, and the only one I thought might work ok was the cheapy $15 black strapless one. That one I think will work nicely - easily dressed up/down. They didn't have that pretty blue one you featured, which I was hoping to to try - so pretty on you!

  11. Thanks Alanna and Angie! :)

Jenny K: I completely understand about the print. It is rather bold and won't be for everyone...that's for sure. The LC dress is super cute, and Kohl's usually has a lot of maxi dresses that aren't shown online, too. Have fun in Florida! The weather is sunny and warm now. :)

shopwithm: Jamaica sounds like SO much fun and a great maxi dress will definitely be perfect for your trip. Old Navy had some others that would also work really well as swimsuit cover ups if you didn't like them for an actual dress. I'm sorry to hear the color of the LOFT dress didn't work for you. That one is so pretty. As for the F21 dress, I don't recall seeing it online recently, but perhaps it was available awhile ago? The one I purchased was mixed in with some other styles at the front of the store, so maybe it had been a return? I'm not sure. If you like, I can give you the style number so you can call around to any of the local F21 stores in your area...just let me know. :)

  12. I think that dress looks great on you; much better than the J Crew maxi which just had too much volume. Surprisingly, I've found three maxis that work great for me (I'm very petite) in the juniors dresses at Ross. I agree w/ the comment that maxi dresses are great for FL -- lucky us!
