D is for Denim Jacket

Hello my dear readers! I hope you are having an absolutely FABULOUS weekend! Today I am sharing another excerpt from the book The One Hundred by Nina Garcia..."A Guide To The Pieces Every Stylish Woman Must Own." It shares the A-Z staples each woman should have in her wardrobe, and today we are continuing on with the letter D. :)

D is for Denim Jacket:

Ms. Garcia writes:

"THE EBBS AND FLOWS of the denim jacket clearly reveal how fashion reinvents itself decade after decade. Just when you think it is a relic, the good old denim jacket makes its comeback. In the '50s, it was popularized by the greasers. And in the '60s and '70s, Janis Joplin and the hippies laid their claim, wearing it to peace protests and rock festivals (sometimes even successfully pulling it off with a pair of jeans), and the greasers were all but forgotten. Then, in the '80s, everyone wanted in on the jacket-the hair bands, the punks, the princesses (armed with their bedazzlers), and everyone in between. It became so synonymous with the decade that at '80s parties across America there was sure to be a solid denim-jacket contingent. And in the '90s, Ralph Lauren borrowed the jacket out of the hands of the crazy kids, paired it with long prairie skirts, cowboy boots, and turquoise jewelry, and it suddenly seemed as though it was meant to be worn that way. Now, when we see them cropped and shrunken on the models and actresses of the moment, we abandon all notions of the past decades and set out to stake our claim on the old classic once again."

BEEN THERE, DENIM THAT

*Be extreme. It should either be really dark or really worn out.
* Buy it a size too small or find a really fitted model.
* In general, don't wear it with another piece of blue denim. The jean tuxedo is strictly for the cowboys. Who actually rodeo and herd cattle. But a blue jean jacket with white jeans is a definite yes!
* Every jean maker should have a version, but a few great sources include Levis, A.P.D., Diesel, Marc by Marc Jacobs. And of course, the vintage shops.

(All the information above is from the book)

I personally have several jean jackets that I wear quite often when the weather cools down, including a vintage '70s jacket that I picked up at a thrift store when living on Long Island in 1993. I also wore a maternity denim jacket from Old Navy during my last two pregnancies. I just love the way a denim jacket can easily make an outfit or dress instantly casual, yet chic at the same time. Since we are moving toward the fall season, many retailers will once again offer up their own personal take on this classic:

*Nolita
*Vermont-Rebel
*Western Style
*Classic
*Lee®
*Levi's Iconic
*Pacific Blue Vintage
*Galliano
*Tommy Hilfiger
*Merona®
*Blank Denim
*Indigo Denim Crop
*Old Navy
*Old Navy Maternity

So what do you think about the Denim Jacket? Do you own one? Do you wear it often? Are you planning on getting one this fall season? Please do share. :)

Have a wonderful day!

xoxo,

  1. I had been trying denim jackets for years but just didn't think that they looked 'right' on me. I got one this summer from Gap in classic wash (with one of their July 40% coupons), and I agree with Nina in sizing down - I got the XS and while it was tight at first, after about 3 wearings it feels and looks perfect. I think that the key for me is the smaller size, and rolling the sleeves up a bit.

  2. I own a denim jacket from JCrew, but I bought a small rather than an xs, and even though I had it taken in by a tailor, it still looks too roomy on. As a result, I never wear it.
So that is excellent advice: size down!
I am loving these posts, FFM, thanks so much!
    Have a super weekend.

  4. My sis (who lives in Amsterdam) gave me a shrunken Zara denim jacket. I love that it has a teeny, teeny waist--because I have a small waist in relation to my hips and shoulders I can rarely buy anything that fits in the waist prior to alterations. I have worn that jacket to death.

In HS in the 80s, my fave outfit was my BF's huge black denim jacket worn over my mother's 1960s Jackie K black sheath and the proverbial "sky-high heels."

  5. I've always had love for the denim jacket, in many different versions throughout the years. I recently picked up a new, more fitted and a bit cropped jacket from J.Crew. I love them for all the reasons you posted!

  6. I bought the Merona cropped dark denim jacket a few weeks ago on sale for $12. I too sized down to a XS and love the fitted look!

  7. Thanks for stopping by ladies! I'm glad to see so many others who also love a great denim jacket! I've been enjoying summer, but have to admit that I am now really starting to look forward to the cooler weather so that I can not only start wearing mine again, but also all of my other fantastic blazers and jackets. :)

    Have a great day everyone!
