Madewell Fall 2011 Preview Plus a Guest Review by Desert Flower: The Silk Canyon Skirt

Happy Thursday Everyone! I hope you're all having a wonderful week so far! If you haven't heard already, Madewell has released a press preview of their Fall 2011 Collection, as reported here on the Racked website this past Tuesday. The report on the preview states, "We're seeing a few trends emerging from the contemporary American market for fall already—lots of red+navy stripes, plenty of beige and light brown outerwear in classic silhouettes and slouchy tailoring, colorblocking in subdued brights, and sports-inspired silhouettes like modified sweatshirts and wide-neck jersey tees." (Additional images shown on the Racked website.)

Included in a couple of the preview shots is what appears to be the Silk Canyon Skirt, which Desert Flower was able to purchase (before it sold out from both the Madewell and Shopbop websites) and has graciously agreed to review for us. Thanks Desert Flower!!! :)

"When the Madewell spring lookbook was released, the first thing that caught my eye was the silk canyon skirt. I have a lot of pencil skirts in my closet and the idea of a full skirt was very appealing to me. It went on sale on Shopbop first, and sold out fairly quickly. It was finally released on the Madewell site and I ordered it. It's is now sold out on their website as well, but anyone near a B&M Madewell could check their store. Also, Madewell does provide a "find it" service like J. Crew. Obviously, this is a full price purchase. Since it's completely gone on both sites, it isn't going to make it to the sale section.

The skirt did not disappoint. The silk is a very nice weight without being heavy. It's a gorgeous color and it lays beautifully. It buttons all the way down the front. All but the top button is hidden under a placket. The skirt has pockets, which I love. It is on the longer side, measuring in at almost 30" from waist to hem. Even though I'm tall, it is mid-calf on me. I like the length and think it will be perfect with heels, although those closer to 5' may feel overwhelmed by this skirt. It has a wide waistband which is meant to be worn at the natural waist, with belt loops. Although it isn't lined, it is not sheer. In the warmer weather I will wear it with sandals, a tank and a leather belt I can loop over.

In cooler weather I could add a slip so I can wear tights, along with a slim fitting top, wide belt and pumps."

Thank you again Desert Flower for the fantastic review, and congratulations on getting the skirt...it looks beautiful on you! :)

Even though the skirt is sold out now, there may be hope that it will be back in stock before too long since it is shown in the Fall 2011 preview...perhaps in additional colors, too? Fingers crossed! :)

Btw, Madewell recently released more new arrivals onto their website, so it's worth checking out if you haven't already. Here are some of my picks:

(If you would like to see more of my posts about Madewell, including the one featuring the Spring Lookbook that Desert Flower mentioned above, just type Madewell in the search box at the top right of the side bar.)

What do you think of the Madewell Fall 2011 preview? See anything that you will be specifically looking forward to? Do you also own the Silk Canyon skirt like Desert Flower? If not, will you be on the look out for it to hopefully hit the Madewell website again? Are there any other Madewell items you have and would highly recommend? Please do share! :)

xoxo,

I have yet to buy anything from JC's little sister brand - any idea how the sizing goes? Order your reg JC size or is Madewell smaller?

  5. Great review and the skirt is lovely on Desert Flower. It may work on a petite who's leggy (so, I'm out). Lisa: I found the tops to fit sim. to JC, order the same size. Don't have a clue about bottoms or dresses.

  11. Lisa: I have found Madewell to fit pretty much the same as J.Crew so far. If you order I would get your J.Crew size or ask a CS for detailed garment measurements. :)

  22. Thanks for letting me guest review, FFM! It was fun.

Lisa, I find Madewell sizing similar to J. Crew, at least with regard to what I've purchased. HTH.

  23. Desert Flower, you look great! Thanks for sharing.

I found the skirt to overwhelm my shorter (a little less than 5'5") frame and returned it. It hasn't been processed yet, so I'm sure it will "pop back" in the future!
