Sunday Shopping: Maxi Dresses

Hello Everyone! Sunday Shopping is back again this week, and today we are going to take a look at Maxi Dresses. I know that they aren't for everyone, but there are some that do like them and others that are on the fence about trying them, thus the reason for my post. I happen to be one who does love wearing them...they are not only comfortable, but very easy to 'throw on and go' with a pair of sandals and fab accessories, creating a look that is 'casually and effortlessly chic'.

Knowing that I love maxi dresses and wear them a lot in the spring and summer, my lovely bloggy friend ajc (of the blog A JC Shopping Habit) asked if I would give some recommendations of maxi dresses that aren't strapless for her reader Joelle, who wants to try one this year...of course I said yes. :) Let's do a little 'online window shopping', shall we?

Splendid Tee Maxi Dress in 'Posy' (also available here)
I love the idea of this dress...the look of a tee and skirt, but with the comfort of wearing a dress. It also reminds me so much of this look from the Jil Sander Spring 2011 collection that was one of my favorites.

Splendid Tee Maxi Dress in 'Agave'...such a pretty color.

Splendid Tee Maxi Dress in 'Cobalt'...love it in this color, too.

Vince Camuto Gathered Bodice Jersey Maxi Dress. This looks incredibly flattering, and I love that the color is Navy instead of Black.

Vince Camuto 'Island Cutout' Print Maxi Dress...love the tropical print.

Calvin Klein Stripe Cap Sleeve Maxi Dress. This would be really cute with a pair of red sandals or handbag, and could also be worn without the belt.

Dee & Ray Printed Kimono Maxi. The vee in front looks fairly deep, but a low-plunge bra or cami worn underneath would easily solve any 'overexposure' issues. (You could also have the vee sewn up a bit at the bottom.)

Splendid Striped Jersey Maxi Dress (also available in 'Nutmeg')

Liz Claiborne New York Fully Lined Printed Chiffon Maxi. When I saw this in the 'Raspberry pink' colorway (it also comes in an equally lovely 'Sky Blue'), I couldn't help but think how much it reminds me of the print on my Bazaar Tunic Dress from J.Crew. Of course I know it isn't the same print, but the similarities are there, no?

Merona® Ruffle Front Maxi Dress...very cute. Be sure to watch the video so you can see how it moves. This one also comes in 'Lipstick' pink, 'Pongee tint' (which appears to be a yellow shade), and 'Zonk' blue. Right now Target is running a promo on their Dresses and Sandals: Spend $50 and save 10%, plus most orders of $50+ ship for free. :)

Mossimo® Challis Maxi Dress. (There's a video of this one, too.)

Mossimo® Knit Maxi Dress in Black/White Stripe. (Video of this one, as well.)

What are your thoughts on Maxi Dresses? Do you wear them frequently during the warmer weather months? If not, are you planning to try one this year? Please do share...I always love to hear from you! :)

Have a lovely day!

xoxo,

  1. I have never worn a maxi dress. I'm 5'6 and have a small frame, so I'm afraid they would look tent like on me. I'm not a fan of the Olsen twin look. However, I'm really tempted to try the Target ruffle front maxi dress. $32 is worth a shot!

    1. Hi Julie! I think the ruffle front maxi from Target would look great on you! It looks to have a 'slimmer' fit than a lot of maxi dresses do. Did you watch the video to see how it fits and moves on the model? It doesn't look oversized or tent-like at all. Which color are you considering?

    1. Janet, you look so fabulous in maxi dresses! They really do suit you. I would love to have both of the ones you have worn recently on your blog, btw! :)

  4. I love maxi dresses and skirts, so easy and chic-looking with pretty accessories. Great picks -- I'm so tempted by that Splendid tee one up top. I might have to pop into NM and see if they have it to try on. Will let you know if I do. They're great in spring with a denim jacket and in summer with cute sandals. Thanks for sharing your picks!

    1. Thanks M! Please do let me know if you try on the Splendid tee maxi dress. It is on my 'maybe' list, so I'd love to know what it's like IRL. :)

  5. I like maxi dresses a lot. Just not so much on me. I can't get past the fact that I feel as if I'm wearing a long nightgown. I actually wore one once to a Sunday brunch & the elderly hostess lady asked if I was so much a hurry to get to brunch that I wore my gown. I laughed it off, but deep down I was mortified.
Still, I see other gals wearing maxi dresses & it looks so chic & hip. Maybe it's my height(5'5") or my size (6) or maybe it's just psychological, but whatever the reason - it's just doesn't work for me.

    1. Hi Jane! I cannot believe that elderly hostess lady said that to you...how rude! I'm sure you did NOT look like you were in your gown, either! Have you tried a maxi skirt? Perhaps that would work better for you?

  7. I like maxidresses but most if not all of them are so long, at 5 3 it is hard to find the right length, and not strapless but I keep looking

    1. Hi Kate! You are right that a lot of maxi dresses end up being too long. I am 5'4" and have quite a bit of success in finding ones that don't need to be shortened. I do have one from Rachel Pally that I shortened and one from Rebecca Taylor that also needs to be altered, but all the others that I own are ok to wear without any changes. I would suggest giving the ones at Target a try. That black and white stripe one there actually comes in petite sizes. Also, QVC sells maxi dresses in petite lengths, as well.

  8. Thanks FFM! Those are great picks, I don't know how you always find just the prefect thing!!! I especially love the first dresses you featured, I love the concept of the t-shirt with the skirt, but the t-shirt never comes untucked or creates a bulk under the skirt, brilliant! And regular bra friendly, what more can you ask?

  10. Oh I went in search of that Splendid dress last week in the US but it was so disappointing in person, really flimsy and cheap looking, but I do love that style.
