J.Crew Pre-Fall 2012 New Arrivals - Fitting Room Reviews: Zigzag Sequin Tee, Tie-Neck Top in Dot, and No.2 Pencil Skirt in Snake Print

Last week J.Crew debuted their Pre-Fall rollout, which you can see on their website here, and in the August 2012 catalog which I posted here. Yesterday my store received their shipment of the New Arrivals, so I stopped in last evening to take a look and try some things on. I also took a lot of fitting room pictures to share. :)

This is the first of several posts which I will be running over the next several  days with photos and reviews of new arrival items. I will also be running a post that shares my tips for 'Planning Your Fall Purchases'. This will include my own 'Fall Shopping List', my personal method of deciding just what goes on that list, how to not get overwhelmed by so many new arrivals, and much more. :) **Update: The 'Planning Your Fall Purchases' segment was posted on 7.30.12, and you can see it here.

For those of you who have been enjoying my J.Crew Runway - Get The Look...  series (featuring the Spring/Summer 2012 collection-see the right sidebar to access previous posts), I wanted to let you know that I will be continuing it into the new season with the  J.Crew Fall 2012 Collection Lookbook, so you can 'Get The Look', too (or at least part of it). Also, my weekly 'A Little This, A Little That...' series that I normally post on Thursdays will return again next week, for those of you who enjoy reading it.

Now on to the reviews! For sizing reference, I am 5'4" with broad shoulders, a short-waist (or torso), 'athletic' thighs, and a 31" inseam. My measurements are 36-26-37, and I normally wear an XXS, XS, 00, 0, or 2 in tops and jackets, a 00, 0, or 2, in skirts and dresses, and a 0, 2, or 4 in pants (depending on the cut) at J.Crew (I used to only have two sizes there, but now I have three).

First up is the Zigzag sequin tee, which has gotten a lot of interest in the JCA community, and is also one of the main items out of the new arrivals. I tried it on in the 'Natural' colorway. As you can see in my photo, the 'natural' color on the tee is darker in person than it is online (which I have come to expect after shopping J.Crew online for many, many years), but this isn't a deal breaker for me this time, as I still think it is quite pretty. The tee also comes in 'Mint', (which you can see on the J.Crew website here), but my store did not get that color in.

Here it is on me in size Small. There was not an XSmall in the store to try, but I actually think the Small is a good fit, and will be size I will get if/when I purchase the tee. I had read on JCA that it may be difficult to get it on due to the neckline being small, but I didn't find that to be the case, and put it on quite easily. I would say the tee is running slightly small. You could possibly take your 'normal' J.Crew size if you want the tee more fitted, or size up two sizes if you want it to be slouchier.

I found the quality on the tee to be very good, and overall I really like it a lot...this one is a potential purchase for me. I think it would be a fabulous piece to wear during the holidays with a pair of black pants, red pants, or skirt in the same colors, but can easily be dressed down for more casual events with a pair of denim.

**Fabulous Florida Mommy tip: When you have a top or dress that is difficult to put on over your head, or you have already done your hair and makeup (which you do not want to get messed up), simply put a slip over your head and face, then slide the top or dress over it, and then remove the slip (of course). The top or dress goes on easily over the slip, and the damage to hair and makeup are minimal to none. It also helps to insure their is no makeup transfer onto the garment.
Btw, If I had known that so many of the new arrivals had to be squeezed on over the top of my head, I would have tucked a slip into my handbag to take with me...something to think about if you are considering a try-on session.

Next up is the Tie-neck top in dot. This is another one of the new arrival items that caught my eye last week, so I was happy to hear that my store had gotten it in. The blouse goes on over your head, and I found this to be difficult, as the neck opening was quite small, and it does not have a zipper to help aid in making it easier to put on. Once the blouse is on, it fastens at the neck with a hook and eye, just under the bow.

The size 0 had already sold out by the time I arrived last evening, so I had to try on the size 00 instead. As you can see, it was too small in the shoulders, and also a bit tight on my arms. I would also say the blouse is fairly short, since I am short waisted, and it comes to the top of my jeans. However, the size 0 might possibly be longer on me, and I know it would be a better fit in the shoulders. Overall I would say the blouse fits true-to-(J.Crew) size, but you could possibly size down if you have narrow shoulders and thin arms.

The No. 2 pencil skirt in snake print has also received a lot of interest in the JCA community, so I took it to the fitting room with me to try on for the blog. The skirt is made of a wool/silk blend that is lightweight, does not add extra bulk, and can be worn in multiple seasons, depending on where you live of course.

The color of the skirt was different in person than online (no surprise there), but in this case it actually seemed to be lighter than the online photo, as opposed to darker or brighter, which seems to be the case most of the time. Neither the color nor the print stand out as much in person as they do online, IMO.

I tried both the size 0 and 2. The 0 was large on my waist, but was too small on my hips and thighs. The size 2 was very large on my waist (at least 2 inches, if not more), but did fit better everywhere else. This is a common problem for me with the pencil skirts at J.Crew, so I would say this skirt is running true-to-(J.Crew) size.

So what are your thoughts on these new arrival items? Have you seen them in person? If you live near a J.Crew Brick and Mortar, do you plan on going in to check out the new arrivals? Please do share! I always love to hear from you! :)

xoxo,

    1. You're welcome WMM! Well, the skirt really is just not flattering on me at all. I would have to have it altered significantly in order for it to fit, and that could very well mess up the pattern. I will leave it to all of you ladies who love and look fabulous in the No.2 pencils. :)

I can't wait to see the skirt on you! I hope you will post a pic before you leave on your trip.

  4. We have similar body shapes so I'm glad you tried on some of the items I'm interested in. I love, love, love the sequin zig zag top even more now but I'm trying to be good and not buy. Sigh!

  5. Excellent fit reviews. Thank you. I bought the Lauren dress earlier this year, so although I am intrigued by the shirt, I probably will not get it (although the rationalizations in my mind are getting louder). Your suggestions re the zigzag and review have changed my mind about this shirt and I am considering it.

    1. Hi anon@10:53am! I am so pleased to hear that the reviews are helpful! :-)

I understand what you mean about the dot top. Besides the RL dress, I also have a couple of polka dot blouses, but wouldn't mind adding this one since it is very different than the others, and would have its own place in my wardrobe. I will wait for sale if I do get it though, as it isn't at the top of my Fall Shopping List, whereas the zigzag tee is close to the top of it, so I am highly considering it even before it gets to sale (if it makes it there in my size).

  6. You look lovely in all of them, the skirt doesn't look too snakey at all here, it looks much softer.
I'm making my list, it all seems so boring but I have to stick to it to sort out the gaps in my every day clothes, once and for all .

    1. Thanks Tabitha! The skirt is definitely softer in person than the online pic makes it look. I think that may make it more appealing to a lot of women, too.

Good luck with your list of basics. I know it can get boring, but perhaps you can treat yourself with a less than boring accessory to go with all of those basics?

  7. Thanks for the reviews! Can't tell you how helpful they are if you, like me, live in a country deprived of J. Crew stores =)
I did receive two of the new items today, both which I think are lovely. It's the D'Anjo Liberty shirt and the Tie-neck top in dot (as per above). Great fabric in both, and fit nearly perfect too (in a size 2, which would have me say they run big, but normal for J. Crew). They are both a little snug in my upper arms/shoulders, but I think that has more to do with me than the design, as this is a usual problem for me. I've decided I rather have that tiny snuggness, than having every top too lose around the body. On the plus side it does show off my athelic arms, o so I tell myself =)

    1. Hi Anna-Karin T! I'm so glad these reviews are helpful, and appreciate you letting me know! It sounds as if we have a similar build as far as upper body goes, as I suffer from the same issue with shirts that have sleeves being snug in the upper arms and shoulders. Like you, I opt for the size that fits best through the body, even if it is just a tad snug at the shoulders or arms. I really think the fit is more flattering this way, too. Thanks for stopping by, and congratulations on both of your new purchases! I also tried on the D'Anjo Liberty shirt and think it is absolutely lovely. :)

  9. Thanks so much for these reviews. All of these items look great on you. How did you find the itch factor of the zigzag sequin top? I am just wondering because ajc just posted about the dress and found it to be extremely itchy.

    1. Thanks Louise! I personally did not find the Zigzag Sequin tee to be itchy. I actually thought it felt quite comfortable on, and really hope to be able to get it. :)

  10. Thanks for the reviews FFM! I love the zig-zag tee on you -- it's a lovely fit and drape and such a fun piece to dress up and down. I think you'd get a good amount of wear from it. I love the dot top as well, but probably need to be cooling it with my dot top collection. :) I'm not a big snakeskin print person, but I know many JCAs will rock it! :) p.s. I received the kick-pleat skirt and will be reviewing asap, but wondered if you got this one. It's really cute and feels more like an old-school skirt. :)

    1. Thanks M! I didn't get the kick-pleat skirt but have been curious as to how it fits and looks like on, so I'm really looking forward to your review! :)

  11. I was only able to try the zig zag tee and found it to be too heavy and very itchy for me. I was disappointed, but I'm sure there will be a lot of other items over the next few months. Other than that top, I tried a boyfriend cashmere v-neck to get an idea of fit - I really like the color block option, but it wasn't in store. I do like the fit and will probably pick one up on sale.

    1. Hi Julie! Oh I'm so sorry to hear that the zigzag tee didn't work out for you! Like you said, there will be a lot of other items coming out over the next few months though, so if one thing doesn't work, something else will come along to take its place that does. :)

Did you get to try on the dress or coat?

    2. The dress has been ordered-I couldn't resist :-) Many sizes are selling out in the canvas, so I'd rather know now if it is going to work - than wonder and possibly regret missing it. I'll keep you posted.

  12. Thank-you so much for the reviews. I coveted but didn't try on the zig zag tee. It looks great on you.

I tried several of the new pencil skirts. I agree that the snakeskin skirt is more subtle IRL than online. It could be work appropriate if a snakeskin print of any kind could fly in your workplace. Sadly, that does not apply to me. I tried the No 2 in retro jade. It is bright but different enough from last year's veridian green to go on my list. I tried but did not care for the herringbone #2(purple). Overall, I think the #2 sizing may have changed again. Last F/W the 0 was a bit loose at the waist but not enough to require alteration. This year the 0 is much to big and the 00 is snug.

I was intrigued by the snakeskin print blouse but the sheer sleeves made it a non-starter.

    1. Thanks Muffy! My store hadn't gotten in the snakeskin print blouse yet, or else it was still in a box in the back room. I'm curious to see it in person though. Hopefully they will get it in eventually.

Very interesting about the No.2 pencil skirts. I really hope they haven't changed up sizing on everything again this year. It really makes it quite difficult to shop with them, especially for those who are only able to shop online.

  14. Great reviews FFM! I had the same big waist, tight hips issue with the silk/wool abstract print skirt. I think they may be screwing with sizing again! UGH!!! I wasn't able to get the photo floral skirt since they would not even honor the promo price. Oh well, turns out my car needs 4 new tires. That's where my $$$ will be going I guess.

    1. Thanks Shekster! I'm sorry to hear about the photo floral skirt. I wonder if it wasn't a website glitch, and that's why it seemed to sell out so fast the day it went on promo. They probably just pulled it from the site once they realized what was going on. Hopefully you'll be able to catch it on sale the next time! :)

  15. Thank you for the reviews! I haven't seen any of the new arrivals yet but there isn't much that is calling my name in this rollout. I like a few things but I feel like I already have something similar or they are too expensive. I am looking forward to your planning your Fall wardrobe posts!

  16. Thanks for the fabulous reviews! I love the sequin zigzag top on you - I am intrigued and will have to take a closer look. I am very much looking forward to your "Planning your fall purchases" post - I seem to struggle with all the new and wonderful fall arrivals and then end up buying too much and usually things that don't always work into the reality of my stay-at-home, casual life! I need to do a better job planning and editing my wardrobe. Looking forward to your upcoming posts!

  19. Hi FFM!

Thanks for two great sets of reviews. I have a questions about the polka dot tie top--are the tops of the sleeves at all pouffy where they meet the shoulder or do they lie flat? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Lauren S! Well, the top I tried on was too snug in the shoulders, but from what I could tell, I do think the tops of the sleeves will be a little pouffy (when the top fits correctly). I don't think it will be a large or overwhelming pouff though. HTH! Let me know if you have any other questions! :)
