Review: Tory Burch Derrius Blouse

On one of my recent trips to the mall, I stopped into the Tory Burch boutique to try on several of the items I've had my eye on. While looking through the sale section I came across the Derrius Blouse and immediately knew I had to try it on. With the combination of polka-dots, delicate ruffles, piping, and the overall ultra-feminine feel of the blouse, it definitely 'had me at hello'.

The description on the Tory Burch website reads:

Prim and proper, our Derrius Blouse hits the sweet spot. The daintily polka-dotted silk top has a distinct French femininity, full of special details like an antique lace front placket, piped trim and delicate rows of ruffles. Pair with slim white pants and girlish shoes to perfect the Parisienne chic look.

  • Swiss dot. Button closure at neck.
  • Hidden snap front.
  • Antique lace front placket.
  • Ruffle detail.
  • Navy trim.
  •  Short sleeve.
  • 22 1/2" in length.
  • Shell: 100% silk.
  • Embroidery: 90% rayon, 10% silk.
  •  Dry clean only.
The blouse is much prettier in person than it appears on the website. The silk fabric of the blouse is beautiful and feels lovely to touch.  It is fairly delicate though, and will likely be prone to snags, so some caution will need to be taken when wearing it.

The blouse in unlined and sheer, so a camisole is required (unless you feel comfortable with having your bra and stomach exposed through the blouse). The camisole I have on under it now is just a touch too dark, so if I decide to keep the blouse, I will look for one in a lighter shade. The blouse has hidden snaps all the way up the front and a solid gold button at the neckline.

(This photo is with 'auto adjusted' lighting which makes the color of the blouse more true to real life, because unfortunately the lighting in my bathroom did not do so.)

I am wearing the blouse in a size 2. It fits well overall, with the band at the arm being just a tad bit snug, but then I do not have super skinny arms, so I'm sure that has a lot to do with it. Also, the sleeves do have a slightly fuller look overall, and even a bit of a 'poof' to them at the top, which I was not able to capture when trying to take the photo.

I absolutely love how feminine the blouse is, and I love the layers of ruffles which wrap evenly all the way around it (you can see this on the Tory Burch product page here), as well as the dots and navy piping. I have tried the blouse with several different options...a black a-line skirt, black pants, navy pinstripe pants, wide-leg trouser jeans, white denim, and medium-wash casual jeans. Out of all the options I prefer the blouse with the skirt, wide-leg trouser jeans, and casual denim (to dress it down a bit).

So while I do love the look of the blouse overall, I'm not sure if I will be keeping it or not. I did purchase it during the last promo they ran, so the price wasn't completely unreasonable, but I keep going back and forth as to whether I like it on me or not...the jury is still out. :)

What are your thoughts on the Derrius Blouse? Have you seen it in person or possibly tried it on? Are you considering it? Do you already own it? Please do share! I always love to hear from you! :)

xoxo,

  1. Hi FFM,I think the blouse is very nice.
For me personally it would be to much with the ruffles and dots combined.
I am sure it looks great dressed down with denim and heels.
Thank you so much for always being so encouraging on my blog!
    Have a great weekend!!

    1. Hi Ina! Thanks for the feedback! Yes, it looks really cute dressed down with the denim. I'm just not so sure it's going to be a keeper for me though. Thanks for stopping by! :)

  3. The blouse is lovely but it may read a little cutesy imo. I would dress it down with something very streamlined and maybe a bit masculine. I like the idea of wide legged, high waisted trousers, or denim crops (like in your recent post with white shirt) and black heels.

    1. Hi ajc! Yes, I completely understand how it can read cutesy. It definitely needs to be worn with something to counter balance that factor...seems like there have been many of those kinds of tops the past couple of years. I have several of them from J.Crew and am constantly in search of a perfect pair of denim to wear with all of them. I agree that the jeans in my recent 'Love This...' post would work really well with this blouse (not to mention all the other ones from J.Crew that I own).

    1. Tabitha: I also love Tory Burch boutiques. The one we have in Orlando is beautiful and so is the one in Tampa. Didn't you go to one out in LA? I would imagine it is gorgeous and probably larger than most.

  5. Well I love it, of course you have wonderful styling ideas for it too! I'm with Tabs, I love those Tory Burch stores, they are so nicely decorated.
I wore "our" Tory Burch heart print dress to Ithaca NY this week, we went to Cornell and to the original Moosewood Restaurant and I had some nice compliments on the dress.
When Tory Burch gets it right she really knocks it out of the park!
    Have a great weekend!

    1. Thank you Dani! I hope you're having a wonderful time on your trip! I also wore our dress last week and received numerous compliments, as well. Actually, I get compliments on it every single time I wear it. It has definitely turned out to be an excellent purchase and one of my favorites, too. :)

  7. Well, if you didn't get 'the feeling,' then maybe it's not a keeper. Imo, it seems like the first tier should be a little higher, coming closer toward the bust.

Black & white is supposed to be big for fall, so there will probably be lots of choices coming up.

    1. Thanks for the feedback, Gigi! Yes, not getting the feeling has been one of my purchasing rules for a very long time now, and probably one of the main reasons I have doubts. I do love the blouse, just not sure that I love it enough on me to keep it. :)

P.S. This blouse is navy and cream. :)

  8. It is a little too frilly for my tastes, but it definitely looks cute on you! I think the material would be a dealbreaker for me though...I hate worrying about snags + that thin material tends to get strained over time when worn. Time for me to go drool over the Tory Burch website since there's not a boutique nearby. :((

    1. Thank you Holly! I feel pretty fortunate to have a Tory Burch boutique near me. It's always fun to see the merchandise in person.

I did end up returning the blouse today. I just didn't love it enough on me to keep it. Thank you for your feedback! :)

  9. Hi FFM! I think it's a really pretty blouse, and looks so much cuter on you than in the model pic! You wear it really well. I can totally see why you brought it home and think I might have too, just to try it on further in the house. That said, I'd say if you aren't swooning over it, and you're a bit worried about snagging, maybe it's not meant to be? The fall rollouts are just around the corner and I bet there will be a lot of fabulous pieces to put the money towards! Hope you're enjoying your weekend!

    1. Hi M, and thank you for the feedback! Yes, I did end up returning the blouse after all. I have been doing really well at sticking to my 'list' and only purchasing items from it...this blouse wasn't on it, so back it went. Like you said, there are going to be a lot of cute new things coming out in the next several months, so I am going to stay focused on what I really want and 'need', add them to my list, and continue to only purchase from it. I really feel more pleased over all about my spending habits and the items I have bought/own by shopping only from my list, so I am going to keep on doing it this way. :)
