Planning Your Fall Purchases...{Part Three}

As retailers continue to debut their new fall collections, I find myself looking more and more forward to the season's arrival. I find myself starting to grow increasingly tired of the sweltering temps and look forward to packing away my summer wardrobe. I anxiously await the cooler days so that I can comfortably wear my blazers, sweaters, and skirts/dresses with knee boots again. I look forward to stepping out into the brisk fall air on a crystal clear sunny day, and gathering around the bonfire with my hubby and boys on chilly nights to roast marshmallows and make s'mores...fall will soon be here, and I cannot wait! :)

Over the past couple of weeks I have been working on my Fall Shopping List. After going through my closet to see just what outfits I will wear again this year, I noticed some items that need to be replaced, as well as a couple of gaps that I would like to fill, and added them to my list. (At this point, my list of true clothing 'needs' are minimal.) Also added to my list are several items that I would like to get even though they are not actual needs. Of course I will not be able to get everything on my list, but it is nice to put it all down in writing, so that I remain focused on what I actually need and/or want as retailers continue to offer more new merchandise. Here is my list (so far) in order of personal priority:

  1. Topping my list are Basic Crewneck Short-sleeve Tees in Black, White, Grey, Navy, Grey, Brown, and possibly Red. I have a few in my wardrobe already, but they are starting to show significant wear and need to be replaced. I also have plenty of patterned shirts in my wardrobe, not to mention that I feel myself reaching stripe, polka-dot, and print saturation, so I am turning back to the simple basics and solid colors. I love to wear a simple tee with a pair of jeans, wide-leg or capri pants, and skirts, as well as under my blazers and cardigans. The tee will work well as a transitional piece that can be worn now while the weather is still warm, and then as a layering piece once it cools down. I am considering the Vince tee above, but continue to look for other options, as well.

  2. Dresses - I have an abundance of dresses to wear during the spring and summer months, but I am lacking in dresses to wear during the fall. I am hoping to find a couple of day dresses that will be comfortable to wear while going about my daily domestic duties at home, running errands, etc., and even possibly a dressier option for special occasions or dinner out with my hubby.

  3. The  Short-sleeve Shirtdress from Theory (above) is along the lines of what I am looking for (only I need more affordable options), and I would also like to find a similar style with long sleeves, as well. As the weather cools down I will also look for dresses in season appropriate fabrics such as corduroy and lightweight wool.

  4. Long-sleeve Turtlenecks in the same colors listed above. I wear turtlenecks a lot during the cooler weather months. I especially love the way they look worn under a blazer, with a skirt, or a pair of jeans and boots. I own several Vince Elbow-sleeve turtlenecks (purchased last year) that are still in excellent condition, but the long-sleeve turtlenecks I currently own are from several years ago, and are starting to show wear or have stretched out. I will be looking to replace those this year, since they are preferred when it comes to layering under a blazer.

  5. As I mentioned in this post last Thursday, the Sterling Skirt is returning this year in additional colors. Black, Retro Jade, Heather Acorn (offered last year), and Crimson Maple, will debut in September. Then in November J.Crew will debut Heather Carbon (offered last year), Sheer Mint, and Autumn Coral. I already own last year's two colors, so I will be looking to add Black this year, as well as Retro Jade and/or Crimson Maple (if the quality is the same as last year).

  6. Long-sleeve Crewneck Tees in the same colors listed above. These will be worn in the same way as the short-sleeve tees, but do not necessarily have to be layered once the weather cools down.

  7. The Double-breasted schoolboy blazer from J.Crew falls into my 'want' category, especially since I already own the Schoolboy Blazer in Navy. However, I fell absolutely in love with the Double-breasted version after trying it on in the store last month. It is so incredibly chic and flattering on (plus I have always loved the photos of Marissa Webb and Emmanuelle Alt in their Joseph Navy Emmanuelle Double Breasted Jackets), not to mention it works beautifully with many items already in my wardrobe.

  8.  The Downtown Field Jacket in Navy. Once again, this is a wanted item and not a needed item, but I fell in love with it as well, when I tried it on here back in July. It's true that in Florida we do not have as much of a chance to wear jackets as those in other states, but that does not make me love them any less, and I wear them every opportunity I get. I think the field jacket would be a great option to throw on with a turtleneck and pair of jeans when taking the boys to the park or simply running errands.

  9. Michael Kors 'Camille' Chronograph Bracelet Watch. I wore my MK look-a-like watch from Target most of last year, but now the goldtone finish is tarnished, so I am hoping to add a new Gold watch to my wardrobe. I would love to be able to get an actual Michael Kors version this time..
That's it for now...however, the list will change as the season moves along and items are purchased and crossed off. I'm sure there will also be a few more items added as retailers debut even more new fall merchandise. When that occurs, I will reaccess my list placing the items most needed/wanted at the present time to the top and the ones with less priority further down the list, all waiting and hoping to be crossed off as my budget allows. :)

So what about you? Have you made out your Fall Shopping List yet? What is on yours? Please do share! I always love to hear from you!

  1. FFM I want to really thank you for these posts. I have been using your shopping list theory for my fall wardrobe and it's really working. I am often distracted but not this season, I have prioritized my list after building up my color story and I haven't been tempted to veer from it. It's brilliant!
I have layering tees on my list as well, I think Vince is an excellent brand. Event the simple Vince tank is excellent quality, I'm wearing one in pink right now, I found it on sale at eluxe.ca.
I really like that double-breasted navy blazer, it's vey chic. It looks like it's sold out online, do they still have it in store?
I hope your week is off to a great start, and thanks again for this excellent series.

    1. Thank you so much Dani! :)

I'm glad you had the chance to try some Vince items on when you were in Atlanta, and your pink tank sounds absolutely lovely! Btw, the pink blazer from the Fall 2012 Lookbook is available on the Net-a-Porter United Kingdom site right now. I know that pink is one of your fall colors. Are you considering that blazer?

Also, the Double-breasted blazer is going to be offered again this coming season. I am currently on waitlist and should receive it in October, unless they get it in prior to that, of course.

  2. Hi FFM,

Great list. I know you got the Vince turtleneck last year. I followed suit adn it's a great piece! Hoping retailers make similarly nice t-necks this year. I got a Tory Burch T-neck at end of season sale in navy, so those are good to look out for. Similar quality and fabric to Vince.

Also a tip on the MK watch. (MK anything, actually) -I know you're an Endless.com fan like I am. Well, they have a 40 or 50% off Michael Kors day or two-day event. They just had one, literally 4 days ago, I think. And I think another one will come along in Nov. It did last year on Nov 19th and lasted maybea day or two days (max). Just remember to use ebates and pounce! :) I got a pair of MK boots (that this year everyone is copying) in snakeskin, priced originally at 600 for 40 percent off. It was still a splurge, but I felt really gratified to get them for so much lower a price when all the other designer dept. stores were sold out!

Finally, I am looking forward to the sterling skirt too! I know you didn't like the jeweled collar sweater - I'm still hopeful for mine - but if it doesn't work out, I might get a collar necklace. They've cropping up everywhere. I'm expecting now (despite my misgivings that we talked about in an email exchange last year) and so I'm trying not to shop for 'after'... it's hard with all the great collection.

Hope you have a great fall and I'll be reading!
    best wishes!

    1. Thanks maqsad! First off...CONGRATULATIONS on your pregnancy! That is absolutely WONDERFUL news!!! You must be very excited! I know you will be one very stylish expectant mother, too! When are you due?

Secondly, what color of Vince t-neck did you get? Is it the elbow-sleeve length, as well? I wore my black one so much, that I ended up buying an extra one to have as a backup...I love it that much. :)

I think I may try one of the Vince long-sleeve turtlenecks this year. They have received really good reviews, so even though they can be a bit pricey, they will more than likely be worth it. The long-sleeve turtlenecks I have right now are from Gap and Banana Republic, which I might consider again this year too, since they always offer multiple colors.

Thanks for the reminder about Endless and the MK events. Right now they don't have the Camille watch, but perhaps they will get it in by November. I'll definitely keep checking. :)

Let me know how your jeweled collar sweater from J.Crew works out. I have also noticed that the jeweled collars are everywhere this season, so I may try a collar necklace as well. Perhaps worn with a crewneck sweater it will turn out very similar to the J.Crew version.

    2. Hi FFM, I'm so sorry to have been incommunicado for this last week - we were finally out of town on vacation and just got back yesterday evening! Thank you so much for your good wishes on my pregnancy! :) I'm excited and yes, striving to be well-dressed, though that can be a struggle when regular pants are too tight and pregnancy wear is too loose!
I got the nude/beige colour in the Vince turtleneck last winter. It is really nice and goes well with the sterling skirt. The only thing I miss in the turtlenecks from high street retailers is the ribbing and consequently the perfect fit. They seem to have a different concept of ribbing, which doesn't look as stylish. If you find cheaper alternatives, though, please do share!
Guess what: the jewelled collar sweater sold out while I was on holiday! Now I'll be waiting for popbacks...it's probably just as well. I'm trying not to shop for out-of-pregnancy items and it woul dhave thrown a spanner in the works!
I'll be tuning in to your regular posts now! all the best.

  3. Hi there! Another great post - I'm working on my list as well. More funds will be directed towards shoes and a bag this year, but I also need sweaters and some basics-though not a lot. I need color more than anything-so I am hoping J Crew delivers some quality options. I cannot wait for the sterling skirt in Crimson Maple-I'm anticipating that with the Thursday roll out at J Crew and may pounce so I can try it in a couple of sizes. I'd love to add a velvet blazer to my wardrobe too;but only on sale-just for fun.

    1. Thanks Nicole! One of the associates at J.Crew corporate that I have worked with from time to time over the past several years is able to find out the information in advance. I think it's possible that the J.Crew 24-7 [24-7@JCrew.Com] associates may be able to find out, as well.

    2. Nicole: After looking at the September catalog that Life As A Cat posted here, it looks as if the Hacking Jacket in Herringbone will be offered in Dusty Jade, Majestic Purple, and a Black shade. I think it may say Cream Black, but I cannot tell for sure.

great list! i love vince, too - i have one tank and it is so soft!

i like your list - it is very clear and concise! i am intrigued by the sterling skirt, but i am not thinking it will work with my body type, sadly. but it is so lovely!

thank you so much for these posts - they are so wonderful!

  7. Great post again. I see your post referred to often, so you know you are really toughing people with your advice. I always have a mental list; I am a very cautious shopper. But, I prefer nice tanks and shells to tees and turtlenecks, because I prefer the silhouette under my beloved cardigans, year round!

  8. i love this list - have been following here for a while but not yet posted! i love your blog!

the double breasted schoolboy in navy is a must for me this season. wondering if they will have something in a similar colourway as the bright turquoise from last year that i SNOOZED on and am still pining for.

thank you for this list - i am dreaming of fall now because of it!! :) xox P

  9. I have enjoyed this series immensely, with this post being my favorite. I appreciate the time, thought, energy and encouragement that you put into your posts! You should be doing a "Dear Abby" type fashion column! I have now added the Theory dress to my wish list - it looks like perfection for my stay-at-home "june cleaver" aesthetic - only more modern! Love the Vince line as well - I have a boatneck tee and a fabulous sweater. I do plan to pick up at least 2 of the sterling skirts this fall - I missed out on them last fall - I do hope the quality is there. I have numerous J.Crew pencil skirts, but I think the Sterling will fill the more "user-friendly" casual skirt hole in my closet. Thanks again!

    1. Thank you so much Elizabeth! :) Isn't the Theory dress fabulous? I'll be keeping my eye on that one. They also sell it a Neiman Marcus, so I'm going to look for it the next time I'm at the mall. I'd love to be able to try it on for fit.

The Sterling skirt is definitely more user-friendly than the pencil skirts are, IMO. I am really looking forward to wearing mine again this year. :)

  10. Unfortunately I haven't been good about putting a list together yet but I've already waiting for several new fall-ish items to come in - leopard loafers, skinny jeans, cropped pants in green and blue. So far what's on my wishlist? Pink suede pumps (I know) and a classic navy blazer (I had one from JC years ago that fit perfectly and sold it - what was I thinking ...)

    1. Hi Lisa! I think pink suede pumps sound beautiful! Do you have a brand in mind? You can never go wrong with a classic navy blazer, so I think that is an excellent item to have in mind for fall. :)

  11. I love all of the organizing and list making that you are inspiring. The best part of my fall wardrobe will be having my closet shelving reworked to have more space and better visual organization. Once that is done, I'm looking forward reworking what I already own. I am keeping my eye out for a nice quality bracelet/cuff to get in the next few months for my birthday.

I share your love of the J Crew Double-breasted Blazer. It has been on my mind since seeing Marrissa Web's version as well. I bought the double breasted Bonnie blazer from several seasons ago, but is not half as nice as the new one. Since I can't justify owning two double breasted blazers, I'm going to try to give mine a bit of a "face lift" with some nice new gold buttons to replace the cheap plastic shiny black ones.

    1. Hi Awakening my Wardrobe! How exciting to get your closet shelving reworked! Being able to better see just what you have is especially nice when reworking your wardrobe. I also love your idea of reworking your Bonnie blazer with new gold buttons. I did that with a jacket I bought at Target several years ago, and it really made a huge difference it the appearance of the jacket. Please do let me know how it turns out! :)

  13. I love this series of posts so much! Your fall list looks great, FFM. Like the Anon above, I have a gold MK watch and wear it daily. I've had mine since 2009 so my cost per wear must be fractions of pennies by now. I recently purchased an MK tank watch with black leather strap and it's finding it's way into my rotation now, too.

I need very, very little so my fall list is quite short.
    - Long sleeved white silk blouse
    - A silk scarf for accessorizing outfits with brown and tan tones
    - A boyfriend type tee for wearing with jeans (looking at Everlane)
    - A gold statement necklace (found vintage on eBay)

I think it is also time to replace my J. Crew sparkle tweed pencil skirt. I've had it for several winters and it's beginning to look worn. I would love something similar but in a less heavy fabric.

    That's it for me!

  16. Just found your blog and love your advice! I need to follow your "make a list" advice for sure! I always want everything JCREW puts out and dont have the budget for it! HAHA ALso I need to follow your advice for basic Ts. I usually end up going with cheap ones and after a few washes, they look just that! ANy other basic Ts you like? The Vince one is a bit much but I still might consider it! Thanks again!!

    1. Thank you Jody Justice! :) Most of the tees I currently own are from J.Crew, but they are v-necks and quite think and baggy. I do have two crewneck tees from Lands' End Canvas which were nice when I bought them, but they did shrink a bit in the wash, and the black one is really showing a lot of wear now. It's really too bad, because I just got them a couple months ago, too.

I don't have any other recommendations right now, but will be sure to post if I come across any that I do like! :)

  18. Isn't it interesting how making a list forces one to think a little differently? Last month, prompted by some books we've discussed elsewhere and a fair amount of existential angst, I decided to go on a six-week shopping hiatus until I make some decisions about the state of my closets and boudoir. Now that I'm about halfway through my diet, I have a draft list on PV and I find I've become quite miserly about it--I'll put something on and them promptly remove it because I don't want it cluttering up my perfect little list! I haven't developed quite so parsimonious an approach to my actual closet, though my "donate" pile gets larger every day.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Hexicon: Yes! That is what I have experienced now that I make my list and stick to it. I am extra picky and quite miserly when it comes to what actually makes it into my closet now. I am also getting ready to do another major closet purge of items that I haven't been reaching for.

Congratulations, btw, for sticking with your shopping hiatus! Doesn't it actually feel quite nice to take a break and get some clarity on what it is you truly need and want?

  19. Great list! Like you, I find myself seeking out quality rather than quantity these days. I've been much more selective in my purchases and rarely hit the fast fashion stores anymore--too tempting and a waste of money.
