A Little This, A Little That...

(Source)

Love This...

And this...

This one, too...

So what did you think of the Mad Men Season 5 premiere?

Did you like Megan's song? How about her dress? According to Mad Men Costume Designer Janie Bryant, it is a vintage piece they found, but both of the sleeves were completely destroyed. She had the sleeves remade and pleated to restore the piece for the show.

Jane Sterling's dress is a vintage piece, as well...a burnt orange and white swirly print silk long dress. Loved the conversation between the two of them after Megan's performance. Roger: "Why don't you sing like that?" Jane: "Why don't you look like him?"

What was your favorite outfit in episode 1? Did you see anything you would consider wearing in present day? Do you have a favorite character?

I'm really looking forward to episode 2 this coming Sunday...hope Betty is in some scenes this time! :)

Speaking of 1960's fashion...Jaqueline Kennedy wore this
Sleeveless day dress in denim-blue linen with buttons down the center back and a pleated waist at the front, for a visit to the Parthenon in Athens Greece on June 11, 1961.

The dress was made in the USA by American designer Norman Norell in 1960.

Today is my youngest son's 5th birthday...Happy Birthday G! It seems like yesterday that we brought him home from the hospital, and he was so small...

When I first had children, other moms would tell me that I should enjoy the time with them while they are little, because before I knew it, they would be all grown up. You know what? Those moms were right...time really DOES pass by so quickly! It may not seem that way when you are sleep deprived and overwhelmed caring for a new little person, kissing the scraped knee of one just learning to walk, keeping little hands out of everything they aren't supposed to be touching, and even dealing with temper tantrums at times, but trust me...those days will be gone before you know it. Please try your best to enjoy every moment...you will not regret it! :)

From the Kitchen...
Homemade (Yellow) Birthday Cake

I found this recipe online here a couple months ago and decided to give it a try...very delicious. :)

Basic Yellow Cake

Ingredients:

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour (do not sift the flour)
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1-teaspoon salt
1 1/4 cups milk
Vegetable oil
1 stick butter (not margarine), softened
1-tablespoon vanilla extract
3 large eggs

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350°

Grease the bottom of (2) 9 x 1 1/2-inch round pans.

In a large mixing bowl combine the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt, mixing well.

Measure the 1-1/4 cups of milk in a 2 cup measuring cup…then add enough vegetable oil to bring the liquid up to 1-1/3 cups.

Add the milk/vegetable oil mixture, butter and vanilla to the flour mixture and beat with an electric mixer on medium to medium-high speed for 2 minutes, scraping sides of bowl as needed.

Add the eggs and continue beating an additional 2 minutes. Pour batter into prepared pans.

Bake at 350° for 20 to 25 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted near center of cake comes out clean, or until cake springs back when touched lightly in the center.

Cool cakes on wire racks for 15 minutes; remove from pans and cool completely.

Frost as desired (I will be making Homemade Buttercream Frosting - recipe below).

Homemade Buttercream Frosting

Ingredients:

3 cups confectioners' sugar
1 cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 to 2 tablespoons whipping cream or milk

Directions:

In a standing mixer fitted with a whisk, mix together sugar and butter. Mix on low speed until well blended and then increase speed to medium and beat for another 3 minutes.

Add vanilla and cream and continue to beat on medium speed for 1 minute more, adding more cream if needed for spreading consistency.

So what have you been up to this week? Do you have any special plans for the weekend? Please do share...I always love to hear from you! :)

Have a lovely day!

Wishing You a Beautiful Day...

Wishing You A Beautiful Day

My week has been extremely busy with appointments for the boys, preparing for my youngest son's 5th birthday tomorrow, and lots of other 'life' stuff (including a sick child and my own horrific headache), which has turned out to mean no time for blogging today. I will, however, be back tomorrow with my weekly 'A Little This, A Little That...' post, so be sure to stop back by. :)

Wishing you all a Beautiful Day! :)

Sunday Shopping: Reader Request - Neutral Footwear

Hello Everyone! Sunday Shopping is back again this week, and today we are going shopping for a sandal or shoe to pair with the Ralph Lauren Polka-dot Cotton Shirtdress that I reviewed here earlier this month. One of my lovely readers who also purchased the dress, is looking for a neutral sandal or shoe to wear with it, (preferably with a heel height of no more than 3 inches) and asked if I would give some suggestions. Let's do some online 'window shopping' together, and I'll share some of my finds with you. :)

The sandal that I personally plan to pair with the dress on most occasions is the Jack Rogers 'Navajo' Sandal in 'Silver'. Metallics work well as a neutral to pair with most outfits, and the style of the Navajo looks very pretty with the RL dress. The same sandal in 'Platinum' would also work as a great neutral and look lovely, as well.

If you would prefer a bit of a heel, they also come in a Mid-wedge.

Another cute option is the Sam Edelman Trina Sandal in 'Natural'.

MIA 'Vena' Flat in 'Nude'

The Corso Como 'Solar' Sandal in either 'Camel' leather or 'Gold' leather would be very cute for a 'casual chic' option.

A dressier option would be to wear a pump in a neutral color, such as the Kate Spade Shelly pump in 'Linen' Patent leather

Tommy Hilfiger Morgan 2

For an inexpensive option, the Kylie Wedge Pump from Payless looks like a good candidate.

As do the Clarks Taboo West at 6pm.com

and the A2 Plush Above Sandal (available at Target) is also a fairly inexpensive option that could work.

A neutral or nude sandal/shoe will not only work well with the RL Shirtdress, but will work with many other outfits currently in most wardrobes. Even if you do not own this particular dress, a neutral sandal or shoe is still an important item to consider. I personally consider them a 'must have' staple piece for every woman's wardrobe. :)

Have a lovely day and Happy Shopping!
