Review: The L.L.Bean Signature Poplin Dress in 'Black Sailboat Print'

Hello everyone! I hope you are having an absolutely wonderful weekend! Today I am posting a review for the L.L.Bean Signature Poplin Dress in Black Sailboat Print. I had been eyeing this dress all last summer because I love the silhouette, and I also like the option of a nautical print that does not read as too childish for a woman in her 40's...plus black and white is my favorite color combination (along with pink and green). :)

I had wishlisted the dress last summer to watch for it to go on sale, which it did, but since it was too late in the year to actually wear the dress when the markdown occurred, I did not purchase it at that time. So imagine my delight when I noticed a couple months ago that it was still on sale and in stock in most sizes. Needless to say, I decided to give it a try, and the fact that shipping on any amount is always free at L.L.Bean and L.L.Bean Signature, it made it an even easier decision.

The description of the dress on the L.L.Bean website reads:

One of our most popular dresses returns: pure cotton poplin in a versatile sleeveless, full-skirted style. Concealed back zipper, side pockets. Removable tie belt at natural waist. Imported.

Fit: Fitted to waist, flared skirt. Center back to hem measures 38". Petite measures 35½".
Fabric: 100% cotton.
Care: Machine wash.

As you can see, the style of the dress is more of a fit and flare silhouette. There is a removable self-tie belt, which I choose to tie in back, as I feel it creates a smoother and more 'lean' appearance for the front view.

(Close up of the sailboat print...subtle and understated.)

After reading all of the reviews for the dress, I decided to go with the size 0, which for comparison happens to be the smaller of my two J.Crew dress sizes. The fit of the dress is perfect, other than the bust being a tad snug, but I knew this would be the case from the reviews. I had considered trying the size 2 to see if it would fit better, but also read in the reviews that sizing up did not help, and only made the fit in the waist larger, so I kept the size 0 in the end. It has a back zip with a hook and eye closure. As reviewers also noted, the neckline of the dress in cut fairly high and mine even sticks out a bit in front. However, I have found that when I use the built-in bra snaps that are on the shoulders of the dress, the neckline lays much better in the front, and does not feel/look as high, either.

The dress is cotton, fully lined, excellent quality, and machine washable. The length of 38 inches comes to just at the top of my knee (I am 5'4" and short-waisted with a 31" inseam). There is a 2.75 inch hem that can be let out for taller women who need more length, and the dress also omes in petite sizes for those who need a shorter length. The dress looks nice worn with heels or flats, and if you live in a cooler climate, or prefer not to expose your arms, it looks lovely worn with a cardigan or jean jacket, as well. It is fitted to the waist, and the pleated skirt portion is full/flared without being too voluminous.

This is the way I wore it to go out for lunch at BJ's Brewhouse last Sunday for my youngest son's 6th birthday (which was actually on March 29th, but since it was Easter weekend, we decided to wait until the next weekend to take him out), and then do a bit of shopping with him and my husband (Toys R Us, Bass Pro-Shop, and then Lowe's to look for a new dishwasher).

What are your thoughts on the L.L.Bean Poplin dress? Have you tried it? Do you own it, or possibly considering purchasing it? What do you think about the L.L.Bean Signature line? Any other items you would recommend? Please do share! I always love to hear from you!

Have a lovely day!

  1. Ilove this on you - have been missing your IRL photos! It looks like the waist is not too high, which is one of the issues I have been finding with so many dresses these days - I think it is lovely!

  2. Adore this dress on you FFM! I had been eyeing this one as well for ages, and sort of forgot about it over the winter. I think the shape is lovely and classic. Thanks for the reminder about it -- off to check if my size is left! :)

  4. Those look nice. I have been watching the "blue" version for a while. I think that I've given up on it going on sale. I would really like to try it on prior to purchasing because I am concerned that the bust will be too tight, but I suppose that material allows for no stretch.

    1. Hi Melodie. The dresses are really very nice IRL. I was able to get the blue and polka-dot during their 10% off sale last month, and used my $10 gift cards on them, too. Hopefully they will run another promo like that one again soon.

As for the bust, if you are an A or B cup then it should fit well. If you are a C cup like I am, then it will be a bit snug, but does seem to stretch a tad with repeated wearing. D cups and larger may have a difficult time finding a good fit with this one, unfortunately.

I hope you're able to try it, and that it works for you. It really is a lovely dress, and a pretty color of navy, too. :)

    2. Melodie, I have this dress in a size 4 Regular in the sailboat print. I absolutely love it. I know a lot of people have issues with a tight bust, but I did not. I wear a 28FF (which is the same as a 32DDD) and I have no snugness or flattening effect. It could very well depend on where on your ribs your breasts sit. Mine sit high and in front. Maybe there's trouble if they sit lower and/or a bit to the side, I can't really say.
The only issue I had with this dress was you could see a few cm of my bra through the armhole. This was resolved by switching from a full-cup style to a balcony style bra. I gave it a full review on the LLB site including the measurements of my dress (under jlcl119). If you're ever in doubt, ask the CS reps for garment measurements. They're more or less accurate and it's helpful when trying to decide between sizes.

FFM, I love the dress on you. It's a wonderful dress and worth the (still high-ish) sale price. I also would like a couple more in this cut. I'm eyeing the new colorblock one and possibly the polka-dot one as well. My current budget unfortunately does not allow me to purchase them at full-price, so fingers crossed for a sale after season!

    3. Thank you both! The dress does look very flattering on FFM and I think that it would work for me. I'll have to look up balcony style bra as well.

    6. Happy to help!

FFM, I'm glad you found my review helpful. I'm a weird fit and I find reviews that provide measurements very useful, so I try to provide them myself when I can.

  5. Hi FFM,

I was like M; eying it but had forgotten about it until your post. Now that I saw your post, I've been thinking about the dresses. Thanks for the post. You look so chic. I must quote my co worker who said, "Some people are fashionable AND have taste". I must put you in that category!

    Have a great weekend!
