Review: Madewell Outbound Jacket in Camo

The Madewell Outbound Jacket in Camo, item a1299, retail $98 - now on sale for $74.99, offered in sizes XSmall-XLarge.

The description on the Madewell website reads:

"This military-inspired field jacket features authentic details—like epaulets and pockets that button—and a softly worn-in camo print. It's just the layering piece for ever-changing weather (and makes everything underneath it look cooler too).

True to size.
Cotton.
Machine wash.
Import."

I've had my eye on this cute little jacket for quite awhile now, so when I found out that it had been marked down in stores with an additional percent off, I emailed my VPS and asked him to send me one to try out. I already own and love the All-Weather Outbound Jacket, which you can see on me in this post, as well as on my Instagram page, so I was confident that I would like the style and fit of this one just as much.

Assuming that I would mainly be wearing the jacket over a non-bulky sweater or tee once the warmer weather arrives, I decided to order the XSmall, since the online reviews stated that the jacket runs large, and I will likely wear it unbuttoned for the most part. For reference, I normally wear a size 0 or 2 in jackets at J.Crew, but I have found that jackets at Madewell can run smaller than those at J.Crew, especially in the shoulder and bust area, so I tend to go up a size in them. My All-Weather Outbound Jacket is actually a size medium, and allows me to layer a hoodie or thick sweater underneath, although I think that I possibly could have gotten a size small, and layered underneath it, as well. This being said, I think a size small in the camo version would be a good fit to allow for layering, and something I am considering since it is still too cold right now to wear this one without a heavier layer underneath.

Here's a pic of the jacket IRL:

The colors are a bit more muted than they appear online, and give the jacket a lovely 'worn in' appearance.

The jacket has epaulets on the shoulders and two functioning pockets on the chest.

The collar of the jacket stands up nicely when buttoned up all the way, creating a funnel neck appearance.

Two more functioning pockets at the hipline which are accessible from the side, as well as at the top under the pocket flap...such a great feature!

The jacket is unlined, but still finished off very nicely.

There is a drawstring at the waist, allowing it to be cinched for a more feminine silhouette.

On me with a basic tee underneath...

Buttoned up.

Also cute with a bit of pattern mixing...I'm wearing the Scoopneck blouse in wildcat from J.Crew underneath it here.

Overall I really like this jacket. The fabric is soft and comfortable to wear, the fit is flattering, the quality is very good, and the camo pattern can easily be worn with many different colors and prints, making it a sort of neutral, just as leopard print has become. I know that wearing camo is not for everyone, but I happen to like it. It is also a constant reminder of how thankful I am for our service men and women, for their loyalty, bravery, and sacrifices. Thank you...our lives would not be the same without you!

  1. Hi Melissa, I tried this one on and I loved the fabric. I wish they'd made the solid colored Outbound Jacket in this fabric, but I think that's made from a heavier brushed type of fabric. IIRC, this one has a bit of a ripstop grid in the fabric. I didn't buy this because I have another camo jacket, but this one is really nice, I agree! I bought a pair of camo shorts from Madewell this spring (can't see the on the website now, though).

    1. Thanks for stopping by to share your thoughts on the jacket, cate! This one is really nice, especially if you can get it a good sale price. :)

I am also going to try the regular Outbound jacket. I'm actually glad to hear that it's a heavier fabric, since it's still rather cold here, and I am in need of transitional outerwear. Sounds like it will be a good piece to add to my wardrobe.

Congrats on getting the camo shorts, btw! I've seen them on the Madewell website, as well as other bloggers, and they are really super cute!

  2. I love this on you….somehow I have been away and missed the big move! My husband and I have always dreamed of retiring to Montana, so you may have to let me know if that's still a good idea! Also, I just want to say you look gorgeous! A full 360 from the straight blonde hair of early FFM! (you were gorgeous then too!). Looking forward to following your new adventures!

    1. Thank you so much Monica! Going back brunette took some getting used to, but now I'm glad I made the decision to do it. My hair definitely takes a lot less upkeep now!

Our entire family really loves it here in Montana. There is so much beauty and grandeur everywhere you look...it is just amazing, and so humbling. There are also a plethora of outdoor activities to do and parks to see, plus I have personally been loving the colder temps and opportunity for wearing sweaters and layers. Let me know if you ever decide to come out this way. We'll definitely need to meet up if you do! :)
