System Reboot

About a month prior to making our move to Montana I completed a 5-day detoxification fast. The previous months of stress due to getting our house ready to sell, putting it on the market, packing and planning for our big move, along with all the other duties of every day life had really taken their toll on me physically and mentally. I decided at that time that I would 'reboot' my system in order to get rid of the toxins in my body, reduce my sugar cravings, and replace my feelings of fatigue with renewed energy.

Even though the fasting cleanse was difficult for the first couple of days, I did make it through to the end and achieved results better than I had ever imagined they would be. My sugar cravings were completely gone, and my palette was reset so that I started craving fresh fruits and vegetables. My taste buds came alive again, and all the healthy, natural foods tasted better than I had ever experienced in my lifetime. My skin took on a radiant glow, and my eyes appeared whiter and brighter. In addition to that, my overall mood and sense of well-being increased along with my energy level, and I even lost a few pounds...gotta love that! :)

Fast forward to today...I am still craving fresh vegetables, fruits, and continue to eat a healthy, well-balanced diet. I avoid sugar, fried foods, sodas, junk food, gluten, and anything high in sodium. I still feel quite good overall, but think I could feel even better. Life in Montana is wonderful, but the entire process of getting out here, finding a place to rent, switching over our driver licenses, tags and other accounts, looking for a home to buy, etc. has been rather stressful at times. Right now I feel as if my body and immune system are not at an optimal level and could use another 'reboot' to once again get rid of any toxins that have built up due to stress and other factors.

Not overly thrilled at the thought of going through another 5 days of complete fasting, I began to do some research into other detoxification plans that would yield the same, or perhaps even better results than what I experienced earlier this year. In my search I came across the book
10-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse
by nutritionist JJ Smith, and spent this past cold and rainy Saturday reading it. I was quite impressed with what she had to say, and have decided to start the 10-day cleanse tomorrow, or Thursday at the latest, depending on when I'm able to get to the market this week.

The 10-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse is based on drinking smoothies made of leafy green vegetables combined with fruit, and a bit of protein powder (if needed) as your meals three times a day. Snacks of hard-boiled eggs, raw nuts, carrots, celery, apples, and other fresh fruit/veggies are allowed between meals if you feel extra hungry. There is also a modified version where you have smoothies for two meals, and then your third meal will consist of steamed veggies and grilled or baked lean protein such as fish or chicken.

Now to me, this sounds like a much easier way to go through the purification process than a complete fast, and something I'm sure I will be able to accomplish, even if it is for 10 days, instead of just 5 days like before. Plus I am really looking forward to giving my entire system the reboot that it needs right now and getting rid of the toxins that have built up in my body. I know that I felt amazing after my previous cleanse and look forward to feeling that way again soon. :)

***The book is available to purchase here for anyone who might be interested.

Have you ever completed a detoxification or purification cleanse? Did you get the results you were expecting? Do you plan to go through the process again in the future? Please feel free to share...I always love to hear from you!

Have a lovely day! :)

    1. You're welcome Wendy! The book really is a quick, informational, and interesting read. It left me excited and motivated to get started on my own 10 day cleanse. Definitely read it if you get the chance. The whole detox process on this one doesn't sound overly difficult to do, and may be just the thing your looking for. :)

When we moved from Germany to the US,i took a toll on me (physically) and it totally drained me and also my husband) Moving with kids is a lot of work!
Do you have a jcrew store near you? Where is the nearest one? Isnt that hard since to were in such a great area to shop in Florida?
How do you deal with the cold weather?

    1. Hi Ina! Oh I so agree with you! Moving with kids really is a whole lot of work, and really does take a toll on you! I think this detox/cleanse is just what I need to feel rejuvenated again. :)

I do not have a J.Crew store near me now, and I think the closest one is in Seattle. The area where we lived in Florida does have a lot of shopping, but I honestly don't miss it all that much. If I do get to the point that I really want to visit a mall, then I can go to the one in Missoula, or take the trip to Seattle to visit the J.Crew and Madewell stores there.

As far as the cold weather, I actually love it, and really enjoy wearing sweaters and jackets. It is still pretty chilly here, so I wear a lightweight jacket every time I go out. It's still hard for me to believe that I am doing that in May! If we still lived in Florida we would be staying at the family condo on St. Pete Beach right now, and definitely not wearing jackets!

  3. Thanks for this post, Melissa. I have done short anti-inflammatory cleanses and this is inspiring me to do the green drink cleanse while you do it. I have been under quite a bit of stress lately (contemplating a big move -- like you!!, homeschooling our 3rd grader, and worrying about our 1st grader in public school -- she needs extra help with reading, so it may be time to keep her home, too, even though she's such a social butterfly). Needless to say, I've been sick and have gained weight -- ugh!! I'm trying to get back into my exercise regimen, but it's hard when I feel under the weather and no energy. Thanks for posting this. I really appreciate it! I LOVE when you post real-life-issues that you're dealing with!!

    1. Hi Janna! Thank you so much for sharing your story, and for letting me know you've enjoyed this post. I would love for you to do the cleanse along with me! I know just how you feel with all the stress, and about starting back on an exercise regimen whenever you have no energy to begin with, so I do hope that you decide to do the cleanse, too. I know that it will help us to feel healthier and more energetic. I actually made myself a green smoothie on Sunday, and could feel the positive effects immediately after drinking it, so I'm confident that doing it for 10 days will have a really remarkable effect. I did make it to the market today to get all of my supplies, and plan to start the cleanse tomorrow morning. I am really very excited about this one and look forward to the results I'll see at the end. Let me know if you decide to start it...we can be each others cheerleader and support throughout the process! :)

  5. Hi Melissa! I read your blog often but have never posted. Reading about the cleanse resonated with me because I've felt the need to detox my system lately. I had surgery two months ago and still don't feel myself. I thank you so much for sharing this. I ordered my book yesterday. Can't wait to get started! When are you starting Melissa?

    1. Hi Cheryl! I'm so glad that you decided to comment! I always love hearing from my readers! :) I'm really sorry to hear about your surgery, and that you still are not feeling like yourself these days. I think you will really enjoy reading the book. The author suffered from mercury poisoning and was bedridden for two months. Her health, energy, and motivation were at an all-time low. This is when she created the 10-day green smoothie cleanse...as a way to get her health and energy back, as well as lose the 20 pounds she had gained while bedridden. The cleanse was a success, she shared her story, and the rest is history, as they say.

I started my cleanse yesterday, so I am now on day 2 as of 5.8.14 . I suffered a headache yesterday, but otherwise did not have any real hunger issues or pains. My husband and oldest son are doing the cleanse with me, and both said they had a headache too. Hopefully that will not be the case for any of us today. Let me know when you start on your cleanse, and please feel free to email me if you have any questions or just need some moral support! :)
