Sunday Shopping: Dresses

Happy Sunday Everyone! I hope you are having a fantastic weekend! This week's *Sunday Shopping* is a recap of some of my dress reviews, as well as window shopping for more *pretty little dresses* currently being offered at different retailers...hope you enjoy it! :)

From Anthropologie:
The Secret Treasure Dress from Anthropologie retails for $118 and comes in sizes XSmall-XLarge. It is available in the color Green and Blue.The description on the website reads:

"Maeve's retro-inspired frock is a hiding place for a plethora of intricate details. Disguised pockets, trickling vertical stripes and ruffled capped sleeves come alive with a closer look.

* Front pockets
* Button closure
* Cotton; cotton lining
* Machine wash
* 38"L
* Imported"

The cotton is lightweight and perfect for summer, plus it's super soft and comfortable, not to mention machine washable. The dress is lined and has tiny snaps between the buttons that help guard against any gaping. It can be dressed up with heels or worn more casually with flats.

Here it is on me in the Green
and also in the Blue worn with a belt.

A few more *pretty little dresses* from Anthropologie:

Here it is on me in size 2:

As with most items at Target, this dress is so much prettier IRL than it is on the Target website. I love the color...Black and White together just happens to be one of my favorite color combinations. The dress is cotton and the weight of it is substantial, yet the fabric still feels soft to the touch, making the dress comfortable to wear. I wore this one with flats this past Thursday and received a ton of compliments everywhere I went. The embroidery is absolutely lovely, and the dress is completely lined, as well. This one can easily be dressed up with heels, or worn more casually with flats...another perfect little dress for summer.

The Merona® Elbow Sleeve Shirtdress from Target retails for $24.99, and comes in size XSmall-XXLarge.

Specifics from the Target website:

* Sizing and Fit: Women Sizing with a Classic Fit
* Material: 97 % Cotton, 3 % Spandex
* Care and Cleaning: Tumble Dry Low, Machine Wash Cold
* Weave Type(s): Poplin
* Garment Length: Above Knee

* Closure Style: Front Tie, Button Down Closure(s)
* Hem Style: Finished Hem(s)
* Pocket Style: Front, Chest Pocket(s)
* Garment Detail: Front Darts

I purchased this in Black, size XSmall and absolutely love it! It is extremely comfortable to wear, and I really think it looks and feels more expensive than $25.

Here it is on me:
This is how I wore it on 6.12.10 for our trip over to the beach condo. I removed the self-tie belt and replaced it with my Roughed-Out Leather Belt from J.Crew :

The Mossimo® Black Kimono Sleeve Maxi Dress retails for $24.99 and comes in sizes XSmall-XLarge. The colors on this one are black, Heather Grey and Royal Blue (which is currently sold out).
The description on the website reads:

* Neckline Style: V-Neck Neckline
* Sleeve Style: Short Sleeve with a Kimono
* Back Style: V Back
* Closure Style: Pullover Closure(s)
* Hem Style: Finished Hem(s)

Here it is on me in the XSmall:
I love this comfy and casually chic. I fell in love with the silhouette after seeing the Lemlem® Lucy patio dress, so this is my less-expensive alternative. The fabric is incredibly soft and the overall silhouette of the dress is flattering to all body types.

More from Target:
 *Converse® One Star® Bengal Stripe Dress in Blue and Antique Grey
*Mossimo Supply Co. Juniors Scallop Hem Dress
*Merona® Sundress in Ebony Print. This one also comes in a Blue Print as well as Plum and Pond Green
*Mossimo® Black Crossover Empire Dress in Navy. It also comes in Ebony, Aqua, Purple, and Spanish Brown.

From J.Crew:
The Indigo-Stripe Schuyler Dress from J.Crew. The dress retails for $168 and comes in sizes 0-12.
The website describes the dress as: "A darling daytime piece that's as functional as it is flattering with artisanal-feeling woven indigo stripes. We engineered the sweet, feminine design—through seam and darting detailing, a deep V-neck at the front and back, a fitted bodice and a fuller pleated skirt—to highlight each special stripe. Linen. Sleeveless. Shift silhouette. Back zip. A-line skirt. On-seam pockets. Fully lined. Falls above knee. Import. Dry clean."

I pre-ordered this dress in sizes 0 and 2 (with the Extra 20% promo offered at the time) after seeing an image of it here on Slastena's blog. I loved the stripes and thought it looked like a great dress option for summer. Even though it looks really short on the model, I assumed it would be longer on me since I'm only 5'4", and I was right, but not by much. The dress is indeed still short on me, but not *indecently* short, at least.

The size 0 gives me the best fit through the waist, but it's too large in the bust (for reference I'm a 34B), so ladies with a larger chest will have a better fit in the dress than those of us who are not well-endowed. The dress is lined, has pockets (yay), and the quality appears to be decent. I really like the fabric, color, and striped pattern on the dress, but the silhouette is not a good one for my build, so unfortunately it went back.

Here it is on me in size 0:

Here's a closer view of the stripes and color:

If you like the shape and style of the Indigo-Stripe Schuyler but want it in a solid color, checkout its sister the Solid Schuyler Dress which is also currently on sale.

Have a beautiful and blessed day!

  1. Started following your blog a few months ago. You make fashion accessible which for a someone like me who is learning to embrace more then jeans and t shirts has been wonderful

    What shoes are you wearing in the pictures of the Elbow Sleeve Shirtdress (which I may have to pick up now) and Schulyer Dress from J Crew?

  2. Hi linds! Thanks for stopping by to comment. :) The shoes I am wearing are the 'Sonya' Huarache Platform Wedges that Banana Republic sold last year. If you're interested in a similar style and color, Frye makes a pair called the Joy Huarache Sandal in the color *Natural* that appears to be very similar to mine. HTH! Have a great day! :)

  3. Love the post on dresses!

    Question: do you ever feel uninspired or bored with your wardrobe? I am feeling that way currently and am trying to figure out how to switch things up. Reading your blog helps, but I wanted to know if you had any other suggestions. Thanks FFM :)

  4. Hi FFM, I have to share a surprise find that came home with me last night. I bought the "Goddess floral" maxi from NY & Co. I NEVER go in that store, but last night it was next door to our restaurant and we had a few minutes to kill, so I walked in and came out with the cutest maxi ever (29.99) and a couple of other great basic tops.

  5. Thanks Julie! :)

    What about adding some new jewelry items or scarves to give some of your outfits a bit of an update? I like to visit Target, TJ Maxx, or Kohl's when I need a *pick-me-up* for my wardrobe but don't have a lot to spend. It's easy to find cute accessories, tees, tops, and sometimes even dresses for cheap that will give your wardrobe a bit of a *boost*. Also, sometimes just clearing out items you no longer wear or want can be very *cleansing*, and help you to see items you may have *forgotten* about. I like to do this regularly and give the clothes to friends so that they get a wardrobe *update*, as well. HTH! I also left a comment on your blog regarding your post for today. :) Have a wonderful evening!

  6. Hi Janna! Congratulations on your new dress! I hope you post a pic on of you wearing it on your blog...I'm sure you look absolutely fabulous in it! Thanks for stopping by to share your great find! :)

  7. Love this post! Do you prefer the green or blue anthropologie dress? you need to wear a cami under kimono sleeve dress? I might because I'm not very big on top. Just wondering!

  8. Thanks Carrie! :) I think I actually prefer the Green Secret Treasure Dress over the Blue one.

    I don't wear a cami with the Kimono dress because my bra is cut lower in the front and doesn't show. I think it may be necessary with a normal cut bra though. Here's the one I have: Maidenform One Fabulous Fit Strapless Bra . It works really great with all of the deep-v necklines currently being offered at various retailers. HTH! :)

  9. Thanks, FFM. I'm going to check that out. Again, I LOVE your blog. You've helped me so much. Today I took my 3 year old to see Toy Story 3 and instead of my usual, I wore the white butterfly maxi dress from Old Navy and a white Jackie. I was inspired by you and felt great. Thanks!

  10. The Schulyer dress looks great on you! Great post too!

  11. I love all these dresses on you! You look absolutely FAB in all of them. That Secret Tresures dress just moved to the TOP of my wishlist!
