Review: Madewell Widelegger Jeans

The Madewell Widelegger Jeans in 'Explorer Wash', item #39456, are on sale now for $79.50 with Free Shipping and Free Returns. The Madewell website describes them as:

Soft, fluid and perfectly lightweight denim with a high waist—it's a polished look we love day or night. Cotton. Belt loops. Zip fly. Slant pockets, back welt pockets. Import. Machine wash.
  • Sit above waist.
  • Fitted through waist and hip, with a wide leg.
  • 34 1/2" inseam.
  • 23 1/4" leg opening.

The jeans are actually 100% cotton and lightweight making them perfect for warmer weather, which is probably why they finally got marked down with cooler temps quickly approaching. They also feel and look more like navy blue chinos than a pair of jeans, IMO.

I ordered the jeans in my regular size 27 and they fit perfectly at the waist, but feel a bit snug on my thighs. However, this is a common problem for me since I have 'athletic thighs', so if your legs are slim, the fit shouldn't be a problem for you. I could size up to a 28 but then the waist of the jeans will be too big. Not necessarily a problem, as I could have them tailored to fit or wear one of my Instant Button for Jeans to take in the waist, but the denim feels as if it has some 'give' and will stretch out as I wear it, so if I decide to keep them I will probably stay with the size 27. The inseam is 34.5 inches and I have on 4.5 inch platform wedge heels in this picture, so the bottom hem doesn't quite touch the floor when I wear them (for reference, my inseam is 31 inches).

  1. Hey FFM!
Remember our beloved J. Crew trouser jean from Fall 08? I think that was the name. Is it similar to that? I have been looking for a replacement for years!

  2. Hi kFr! The Madewell wideleggers are much lighter weight than the J.Crew trouser jeans were...almost chino-like actually. The color isn't as dark as the trouser jeans were, either, so the only thing they really have in common is the silhouette.

I'll keep my eye out for a pair of jeans similar to the J.Crew Trouser Jeans and will be sure to post if I come across a pair. :)

  3. Hi FFM,
I tried it at the Madewell store and absolutely love it! It's a great fit and I love the material but my only worry is if it's going to fade very quickly since it's almost chino like, would love to get your input/review about the wash. Thanks.

  4. Hi Joelle! You really make a good point about the fading factor! I know they will 'bleed' color until they are washed a couple of times, but I'm not sure about fading after that. It does seem likely though that since they aren't like a normal pair of jeans, there will probably be a good chance they will fade a bit over time. I just hope that it's minimal. :)
